Thread: Facebook fanpages...

Here's the link to mine:

The types of things I put on mine include:

• Announcement of new articles I've added to Shira.net
• Announcement of existing articles I've revised or updated on Shira.net
• Links to web sites and news stories that I think may interest people (mostly sites/stories related to belly dancing, but occasionally something else like warnings of scammers on facebook)
• Quotable quotes about dance
• Dance tips

Of course, I'll also post ads such as announcements about my upcoming workshop schedule, but I try to have at least 3/4 of the stuff I post be interesting or relevant to belly dancers in general, whether or not they're able to come to my workshops. I will hope that will motivate people to stay subscribed to the page and keep reading it.

In facebook language, a profile=person and a page=business. So I think most people are just trying to build their business, not merely as an ego-trip. OK I understand on where you're coming from and how you can use it to promote. I'd agree that "fan page" was a poor choice for FB to call these, maybe professional profile or something. I am a "fan" of a few of my favorite local dancers but lately I've noticed an big increase in these requests.

I like to keep my personal page personal. So I only friend dancers I know in RL and a few cyber pals but otherwise..well, I moved this week and posted my new address without thinking twice and I can feel good about since 99.9% of my FB friends have been invited to my home at one time or another.

I use my 'Azraa dance page to connect with other dancers on FB. If they want to keep up with where I will be, what I think is cool, they can fan me and I will fan them.

I use my Bluegrass Bellydance page to promote classes, and keep in contact with students. I post videos and links for my students and friends.

I guess facebook heard many of the same complaints. I got this message from them today regarding fanpages:

Starting today people will be able to connect with your Page by clicking “Like” rather than “Become a Fan.” We hope this action will feel much more lightweight, and that it will increase the number of connections made across the site.

Since I added my Facebook pages here, my fan base has increased too! I love Bhuz!!!

Question from a complete technodummy:

I've started looking at the facebook fanpage stuff and where the program requires you to identify yourself as either a local business, product, or artist, what did you select? Then, from that selection, how did you further identify yourself (for example, if you selected artist, did you call yourself a celebrity, or an athelete or what?)

I created mine for an event, so I'm not sure if my settings are applicable. But I did a fanpage for another friend who set his up as a celebrity.
