    Cheap veils?

I'm looking for really, really inexpensive veils to use as loaners in class.

Yes, that's right, I'm too lazy to hem some cheap chiffon.
(hey, maybe I could offer to pay a student to do it & see if there are any takers?)

    Meanwhile, anyone have a source?

maybe you can contact wholesalers who want to move out old inventory, maybe if you bought at least ten of them you could get a good price?

    are you looking for chiffon?

The lazy alternative to hemming is fire: Pull the fabric through a flame. The fabric melts and won't ravel. And, it can be done while listening to the news of TV (as long as you don't get too animated by the news).

Flame?!? oh gosh that sounds scary!! can it be done with silk or only synthetics? (have an unhemmed silk that's fraying a bit)

It is not dangerous if one knows one's fibers - synthetics melt, don't burn. Doesn't work with silk, because silk burns (silk is mildly flame-retardant, but it burns). Don't try that with natural fibers. Cotton and wool also burn.

Hmmmmmm....thank you! So, does chiffon burn?

Jes, I'm looking for whatever I can get really cheap, like $10/veil.

Polyester chiffon, which is what can buy here at JoAnn, melts. I learned that trick in my very first belly dance class, it is not my idea ;-) If in doubt, take a few fibers and try what happens with a candle over the sink. To melt a hem, you hold a piece of fabric fairly taunt and just pull it through the flame. Too fast, and it doesn't melt, too slow, and it melts too much. It's super-simple.

    Yay!

The melting is brilliant, but Dharma is perfect, since I need to order a slip from them to wear under my Khaleegy thobe anyway.

    Thanks everyone!

Just as a side note, you can get this effect a little more safely by cutting the fabric with a "hot knife". Like a soldering iron.

A pro costume designer said she did a couple hundred "petals" for Waltz of the Flowers ballet costumes by cutting them all out this way, and no fraying!

Eclypse Belly Dance had silk veils on sale for $20 a piece not too long ago. Looks like all of their veils are pretty reasonable too.http://www.bellydanceshoppe.com/index.php?cPath=12
