Wholesale music & videos?
I'm looking for a source to buy a small quantity of music and maybe a few videos wholesale.
I'd like to work with one source rather than having to go lots of different individual sources for each thing, and I want to pay TRUE wholesale prices, not vend for another retailer. I'd like to be able to get Hakim CDs, maybe BDSS products, compilations... a wide variety.
Has anyone done this? I noticed Maqam offers wholesale, has anyone worked with them? Or with another supplier? Your experiences?

Some vendors who offer true wholesale include Mary Ellen Donald, Hollywood Music Center (aka Peko Records), and Putamayo. I personally have purchased from Mary Ellen, and I know folks who have had positive experiences dealing with Hollywood Music Center and Putamayo.

I just bought for the first time from Hollywood Music Centre and, even adding in postage to Australia, their wholesale rates were great. Huge selection (incl. DVDs), super-speedy service. I believe you have to purchase 20+ items at a time for wholesale. I just sent them an email asking for an account and they said yes. You order through the website and it automatically calculates the wholesale rate - simple!
PS - I just love shopping for students! It's a great way to satisfy the shopping bug without going broke. You get to spend, spend, spend, admire the goods, then recoup all the costs. I'm sitting here now with a boxload of hip scarves for my students. Pretty pretty...

I have inquired on maqams wholesale policy. It basically just saves you tax and maybe a hair more after all said and done. That is not true wholesale price to me. You can order directly through bdss. They are easy to work with.

I am wholesaling the By Dancers for Dancers series, but actually you may prefer to just contact michelle, because then you would also have access to the rest of her products liek the instructionals.
Dahlal has wholesale, but not of the kind you are lookingfor... umm...Turkish emporium has some wholesale music but I have no idea if it is anygood. Bahaia wholesales her music album "ya Bahaia". Jim Boz also has an album that I am sure you could discuss with him.
As far as Hakim, to my knowledge Miles Copeland is the only person to go to in the US if you want the music legally. Last I heard, their distribution chanel was Universal (as in getting the musci into the megastores), but you can just do it directly with his group if you're looking for something smaller. (They can be slack on communication, so you might have to make several tries)
Adam Basma wholesales his music at a good price, is a prompt shipper as well. when I have sold music in the past, his is the stuff that was always most popular, hands down. www.adambasma.com You can call to discuss, but he'll probably tell you to email him.
Tim Rayborn is very much part of teh belly dance world, and I am sure would be open to talking about wholesaling his music. He strikes me as an organized responsible type to deal with. www.timrayborn.com Horacio and Beata Cifuentes have been very reasonable to work with as well. You can email them through their website I believe.
John Bilezikjian has his own label, and it is called Dantz Records IIRC
Hope any of that will be useful, I've had a crazy night with a flat tire, and can't think of anything else just now. good luck!

Thanks everyone. I'm really looking for one distributor who can give me lots of variety rather than having to order from lots of different sources, so I decided to give Peko a try. I e-mailed them and they e-mailled me back within an hour with a friendly excellent response!
Miles is the only legal place to buy Hakim? So Borders, Amazon, itunes, e-music, Peko and Maqam are all carrying bootlegs? Or are they all buying from Miles? Since most of them carry other BDSS stuff, I'll assume they're buying from Miles.
Thanks so much for the input & advice, everyone!

I don't think that is correct about Hakim. ARK21, which is the company miles used to run and went bankrupt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ark21) no longer has rights to Hakim music according to his manager in VA.
As far as I know adam basma now has a distributor but not sure who.

thats interesting about ark21/mondo melodia. the info I had from them is a several years old, from when I lived in socal.
I've always bought my AB music direct from adam but I think it's great if he's getting distribution too. He really shelled out a lot of money to produce some of those albums, so it would be really nice to start seeing his stuff in mainstream megastores!
