Thread: Business names?

I need a little help on what to name my business.
I thought about shimmy miami, but want to get other suggestions.

You might want to keep whatever you choose more open-ended. We ended up calling our LLC, our studio and our dance company Samovar because 1) daughter's real-and-stage name, Ruric, is also the name of a Russian prince and 2) we like to drink a lot of tea and 3) we wanted to avoid the 'typical' belly dance name harmonics of shimmy, shiny, belly, giggly, etc. Ruric is 5' 10" in bare feet and tends to deck anyone who tries grabbing at a costume piece to stuff money in it :)

This turned out to be a good long-term decision because now our studio is home to Flamenco Louisville, a local bharatanatyam teacher, and Ruric's new bollywood troupe. And they perform in a tri-state area, not just in Louisville.

So, pick a name you can grow into!

Unless you're like me and your last name is already famous for something totally unrelated to dance and your first name isn't a name but a common object.

I would agree with the advice about a general name without reference to bellydance in particular. If you are opening a studio and other instructors might be sharing space, it might be better to be more general.

On the other hand, if you are also acquiring a domain name and you want to hit higher in searches for 'bellydance', you want 'bellydance' in your domain name. You can have more than one domain name but it's something to consider when you register a domain.

Exactly what is your business? Are you a vendor? Selling costumes or making and selling them? Are you organizing events? Are you an instructor; do you own a studio for belly dancers, or a studio in general; or are you mainly a performer? etc.

It makes a difference. I agree, a general name is better if you don't want be belly dance specific, for example a dance studio that can be rented out to other instructors from different dance forms, or a vendor, who will eventually deal with non-belly dance costumes, etc.
If it's only belly dance, being specific might help, and your name might be helpful if it's included, but all of these depend on so many factors.

I think Aziyade here had some trouble with naming her business after the town she lived in, because some newbies named their business something similar.

if you have a website (which you will eventually want to do, at least to have online presence) try to pick a name that you can also fit into a domain that is available..also try to choose a name that has what you are 'selling' in the title so that search engines pick it up


in retrospect I should have picked something like www akaisilksbellydanceveils dot com or something like that
