studio fees
I would like to know what you all think is fair to pay for studio rental time.
The scenario is: I am teaching a class at a venue and being paid an hourly rate. I want to book private lessons during the hour following my class (studio is typically empty at that time anyway).
The owner wants a 40% split. My private lesson fee is $40 per hour, so I would need to charge over $65 per hour to get my rate and pay her split.
I think this is too high, but I'm curious what the going rate for studio rental for a private class is, particularly in small midwestern cities.

Re: studio fees
I think that's a bit high, but in my experience studio fees can vary pretty widely. Generally, if you have a relationship with the studio already it is lower, however. I would try to negotiate it down. I've generally paid around $10-15/hour or 20% for a studio fee if I teach classes there regularly.
I would offer her $12/hour then charge the fee to the client.

Re: studio fees
For rental of my studio in downtown Kingston Ontario, I charge $25/hr. plus 5% tax. This is for any rental purpose to teachers/groups not associated with my studio, including private dance lessons, yoga classes, etc.
For private lessons with Oasis teachers, I offer an advantageous rate by dropping the studio rental fee to $15/hr. plus tax. The going rate for a private at Oasis is $60/hr. plus tax so it comes out to $45 or 75% net for the teacher and $15 or 25% net for the studio.
Is the owner charging the same rental fee to everyone? Since you already teach at this venue might it be possible to work out a better deal?
Good luck!

Re: studio fees
In Louisville KY we charge $40/hr for prime-time studio use (5 - 9 M-F) , $20/hr non-prime to teachers, $5/hr non-prime to students needing practice time.

Re: studio fees

Re: studio fees
You are renting - it should be a flat rental rate. It's not a class sponsored by the studio so they don't get a percentage of your class fee.
When I rent, the studio charges me $20 per hour. I charge my students $50 - I get $30 for the hour which is slightly lower than my normal private rate of $40, which they would get if I came to their house or they came to mine. I do this because I think $60 is too cost prohibitive for most of my students to ever have a private.

Re: studio fees
Okay, so here is some more info:
The venue is a small, locally owned gym for women. The belly dance class (currently taught by me but which rotates around among several members of my dance company depending on schedules) is the only dance class. The studio is primarily used for pilates, yoga, body pump and some other fitness classes.
A 40% split is what she charges personal trainers and massage therapists who use her facility, thus that is what she offered me when I inquired about booking extra studio time.
It is small dance studio but nice -- lots of mirrors, sprung wood floor, sound system. The rest of the facility includes a larger room with weight and cardio equipment, a locker room with showers, tanning room, room for massage etc.

Re: studio fees
Dont come to Greece you will freak out !
With usual rent per month 3.000 euro for 150 m2, the studio owners ask:
a) 60 % from normal monthly classes what students pay...
b) 50 % from privite lessons
I keep having huge classes and many per week so i'm ok with a) case
but stoped giving privites as i found it special with the greek economy today not good for me or the students.
Instead i installed a miror at my house and give the privite's there, with lower price than last year and have 10 hours per week, this way it works

Re: studio fees
studio fees here are usually $15-$20 per hour, tho I have paid as much as $40 an hour for larger spaces. if you look at it as $39 for your fees and $16 studio rental, $65 doesn't seem that bad. I charge $60/hour private lessons (which includes studio time) or $40 if the student can provide an *appropriate* location for lessons, so while I don't like the percentage split idea on principle, it looks like it works out to about what I'd end up with anyway.
