Ran into this gem of an ad today
Need two belly dancers for a private bday party in an established Dupont Venue

Must be physically fit, and experienced at this genre of dance.

Must be available Sept. 5th between 9pm-12am.

Submit BOTH photo and dance experience resume for consideration. Links to video performances are a plus.

$75 + tips for one hour. (Broken down into two 30 min performances)

Location: Dupont
it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
Compensation: $75 for one hour of performing

Um, triple that (per dancer) and he'll at least be in the ballpark (maybe, depending on geographical location).

The sad part is that there ARE dancers that will do it for that!

Well, at least the advertiser wants people who are physically fit and experienced at this genre of dance....

More likely they HAVE done their research, which is why they're trolling craigslist for pathetically eager students and undercutters rather than simply calling and booking a reputable professional dancer.

Wow. I am with ssipes here; they'd have found someone reputable, and are probably trolling.

I don't even think somebody who was "experienced and physically fit" would subject themselves to an hour of performing.

Well, he does say that it's split into 2 30 minute performances, and I do that all the time. But I am compensated appropriately. I think the listing is quite misleading, actually, saying that he's paying per hour, but that it's split into 2- how much time is between the sets, and why should that NOT be compensated? It's pathetically low for an hour gig, but this is MORE than that, which makes it even worse.

Ohhhh, good. I was multi-tasking and totally missed that part. At least it's two sets!

Even so, when I do multiple sets, I always take into account the very real possibility that I will have to wait (and wait...and wait...) between sets. ,r:;

In this area- most dancers charge $250 or more for a 20-25 minute show.
If they were guaranteed close together- the rate should be about $500 (per dancer) for this event, although maybe a small discount for the second show.
If it's a long wait- full price for each show plus wait around time...maybe $600.
She might get someone for $75 an hour sadly enough.
I believe she started calling around yesterday as myself and a dance friend both got phone calls with this party date/description.

And we all know Dupont Circle is such a poor area in the DC area where people can't afford to pay the going rate for services. . .

Okay, just because I am spiritualized doesn't mean I can't snark. . .

Sounds like somebody's friend told somebody that she shouldn't have to pay more than $75. I hope she spends 17 hours finding just the right deal.

LOL. Well, that reminds me- Dupont Circle- extra parking time and allowance for paid parking. That's a definite part of the job.

What is funny my first thought when reading that is sounds like the person asked someone for a quote and didn't like what they hear. I really hope that someone doesn't stoop so low to do a full hour of dancing for people who think you "MUST" be physically fit for $75 i don't care if they only took one class... you guys should anonymously email the poster and harass him til he takes it down.

I don't know- I wouldn't mind being paid $75/hour. Let's see- one hour for make up, half an hour for hair, 2 hours to find, edit & burn the perfect music, 5 hours of extra rehearsal time, drive time, wait time before, after & between sets- yep. It's only around $900, if I were close. Oh, wait- that's $975 if I actually dance, & seeing as I'd be flying from Alaska, now...

Unfortunately, I've seen much worse than this on CL!!
