contract/deposit
so I've decided I want to start using contracts and deposits but I can't find the thread I'm looking for on here...
I think there was one that Michelle posted that she said was available for anyone to use...is that the one on her website? Does anyone else have one they'd be willing to share with me? :D
How much do y'all charge for a deposit? Half? 1/4th? How far in advance?
I'd love to hear more insights.

Re: contract/deposit
Contracts and deposits are definitely the way to go!
Yes, Michelle lets people use the one on her website. She is always so generous! I emailed her asking permission anyways though. I modified it a little to include things like the client's use of photos/video of me from the event, bringing an assistant, and travel surcharges, but it was great to have her format to start with. If you want to see my modifications I can email a copy to you.
I charge a 50% deposit due at booking so how far in advance really depends on how far in advance they are contacting me. They have the option of paypaling me so even if the gig is last minute they can't use the excuse of "it won't get to you in time" to get out of sending the deposit.
It is so much better to know I have a confirmed booking and a partial payment. My deposits are also non-refundable (unless I have to cancel and they don't want a sub) so if they cancel on me I still get paid for any prep work I had already put in for their event.

Check out Michele Joyces contract on her "Hire" age: Hire a Professional belly Dancer
Also, Yasmin of Magic hips: www.magic-hips.com - Performance
Hope that helps. I have an "agreement" somewhere around here. I should probably find it. When I do, I'll post it. I wrote it, but one of my Entertainment Industry Lawyer type friends signed off on it.

Re: contract/deposit
Laura 2, do you have a contract that states that or do you just verbally tell your client and they work with you that way?

Re: contract/deposit
I never do a gig without a signed contract, and yes, the deposit is spelled out in it:
Payment: A $x.xx non-refundable deposit is due at signing. This deposit will be credited against a total performance fee of $x.xx. Payment for balance due is required in the form of cash or check upon the arrival of the performer on the day of the performance. Checks must be made payable to “Galatea Middle Eastern Dance”.
In the case of a bounced or returned check, the client agrees to pay an additional fee of $20 plus the agreed upon amount for services rendered.
