Thread: Another Round of Twitter, LiveJournal, and Facebook Connecting?

Is it time for another round of posting our contact info on Facebook, Twitter, and LiveJournal?

How about if, this time around, we include this info:

1. What types of topics you tend to post
2. What type of people you expect to be interested in the updates you post


I'll start....

On facebook and twitter, I tend to post the following:

• Quotable quotes about dance
• Belly dance tips
• News of workshops I'll be teaching
• Announcements of new articles, updates to existing ones, or timely "featured articles" on Shira.net
• Other dance activities I'm involved with.

So, the primary type of person I'd expect to be interested in the above would be people who like to read my articles on Shira.net and want to know what's new.

On LiveJournal, I tend to post some of the above, but I also tend to post stuff that's more "bloggy" in nature - introspection, processing stuff I've experienced, etc. In other words, stuff that wouldn't fit in a tweet or a facebook status update.

So, that's what type of stuff I'm posting on social networks. What are YOU posting, and where can we find it?

I don't really use twitter or livejournal for dance related stuff so no point really in sharing that here.

Mahira and Mina, how about telling us a bit more about the type of things you post on those accounts? Ie, is it stuff that would be primarily of interest to your own students such as your class schedule and recitals? Or is it a local level of appeal, meaning for not only your own students, but also other teachers and their students, such as haflas that you organize? Or is it stuff that would appeal even to people who aren't local, such as musings about your dance journey?

On the FB page, I post things I organize as well as events I host and help others to promote and host throughout the GA area :) I also post my own classes and other things.

On LJ not allot atm but mostly community stuff and personal stuff.

I have a fanpage - www.facebook.com/maryraks which is almost exclusively dance-related. My profile has all my personal stuff.

I also have a twitter account - twitter.com/maryraks and that is a smattering of everything. It's for dance, so I try to keep things dance related, but there's a healthy dose of irreverence and some very entertaining conversations with fellow dancers.

I tend to post dance-related articles and videos that catch my eye, in-progress photos of costumes I'm working on, and information on dance events in and around Connecticut.

I post class updates and information about events I am participating in or just know about and want to share. Since only about half of the folks on the page are actually local to my town, I also post links to dance videos I like, links to articles or other sites, projects I am working on that might be of interest to dance friends and colleagues, and occasional recommendations for songs or DVDs or businesses. I like it, but of course I am quite biased since it reflects my own belly dance interests! :)

The public stuff is mainly about my dance life, teaching, performing, choreographing etc. But the juiciest stuff is usually friends only and filtered.

Again, it's the public face of my dance life.

I have got a twitter account, but I'm still trying to work out how I want to use it, so it's a bit sparse at the moment. I was thinking of doing a "Combo of the Day" type of thingy, but knowing my attention span, that might prove to be a bit difficult to sustain! Maybe a Combo of the Week... What do you think? I tend to post happenings in the NYC area, my own classes/events and belly dance clips/links of general interest on FB, costuming and more of the same/chatting with dance buddies on Twitter. My FB links to Twitter so those get tweeted as well.

UI'm all over! I mostly talk about upcoming events and local dance things, but occasionally I mention stuff about belly dance at large. I rarely talk about personal things on these.

On facebook personal account I post photography and dance business appropriate stuff with some light musings. I love to friend other bellydancers. I love seeing other peoples photos and fun musings. I like knowing what city someone is in. I keep this wall up to date with any events, project and photoshoot deals I am offering. And sometimes talk about my puppy- because, of course, everyone wants to know how Charleston is doing :) but other than that I keep the tales of doing laundry out of my posts. I post lots of photos= fun fun.

I don't accept friend invitations from people who are not belly dancers, who do not have English on their wall, and no males (unless I know them). I frequently un-friend people who post lots of applications or other random junk on my wall or who newsfeed excessive negative topics.

This has ended up an almost exclusively dance profile, but occasionally I post stuff about my various animals. I try to have community related posts, talking about dance events and happenings around my area Perth, Western Australia.

You can find me on twitter @nandadancer where again it is a dance focussed profile where I post about what I am up to dance wise, links to occasional cool dance stuff, article etc. I also post there on web and techy things and other bellydance businessy related stuff.

The last round of this I picked up some great people to follow on twitter and finally 'got' why and how people use it.

My arts page on facebook is Amanda-Corrine Arts, I have been starting to post photoshoots ive done with dancers up there and some of the new things i have planned to work on (figurines, wearable arts, new veil ideas etc). will be going up there starting in jan.

On Facebook, I am listed as Makeda Maysa. This is my exclusively bellydance account. I post about events in my local area (Baltimore/Washington), events including/hosted by Lotus Niraja and/or The NDC, the Belly Dance Nationals Competition, Project Belly Dance (for the moment). Also, I have committed to a yearlong effort to really intensify my dance practice, so I will be posting on a daily (hopefully) basis about what I've done that day and what insights I've gotten. I'd love to have other dancers make the same commitment or at least follow along with me on my journey and share feedback, etc.

I also have a personal account: Toya R. Smith. Keep in mind that this account can be about anything. So, I sometimes post about bellydance, but I also post about make-up, P90X (and other things I'm doing for healthy living), writing, popular culture, my daughter, etc., etc., etc.

On Twitter, I am @Lifeofaladybug. It's a mix of my two Facebook accounts. I have daily life stuff - P90X, healthy living, pop culture, pet peeves, reality TV stuff, etc., but it's also where I'm keeping an account of my yearlong dance commitment. I've started the hashtag #YearofMakeda if you're interested.

Anyone having trouble with Facebook friend requests lately? It keeps blocking me from requesting people I do actually know, while at the same time annoyingly suggesting people who I don't know, just because we have one mutual friend :P

On my personal profile I post about
- dance related items: pictures of my performing, talk about classes sometimes, some of some of my performances, but only if it's worth mentioning (weird, funny, nice, etc). I usually don't post where's my next performance, I figure enough dancers do that :) plus it's all on my website :)
- personal things: I am very selective of what I post about, I don't give out too much personal details, for example I might mention my daughter here and there, but no pictures of her or other identifying facts. I talk about my student teaching (something hilarious is always happening) but I don't provide too many details (names, location, etc), my goat, my daily life in general, etc.

I would say my personal profile is me: a belly dancer, from a more personal point of view. It's sort of a personal extension of my website. I keep it professional, no negative stuff, no venting, no bad language, etc :) I still want to look professional :)
I do not send invitations to my events. I think it's annoying when people invite me to places where obviously I can't get to. If I create an event (party, for example) the people invited are handpicked. You won't get spam from me.

I just created a page, which will be used to sell dance related items: costumes, hair accessories, dance accessories, etc. A lot of these are on my personal profile right now, I will transfer most items, and then might take it off of the personal profile.

I do post my belly dancing things on here, but I also post things about my family- cute things my kids do, etc; quotes that I really like; occassion things that I'm learning about in my Tao studies (although I'm pretty mute about that- it's a very personal journey at this point); things like that. I DO play games on Facebook- Farmville, etc- so if you friend me and don't play, you probably want to block the apps. (Although if you're on FB and don't play games, you probably already block them!) I don't play very many and don't post 90% of the things you're supposed to, but still...
