Boobie Bra
I had to share this video...look for the dancer with the "boobie bra".....
The dancer cannot be separated from the dance, she also cannot be separated from the history of dancing, from the line of dancers and teachers leading to her.

Re: Boobie Bra
oh my! I can see why you reacted to it, it's quite striking on the video.
It may not have looked like that in person/up close though. Unless you know this dancer and she's invited to the thread, it might be pretty hurtful to talk about her costume in a public forum.
Comments sometimes get ugly when people start trying to be funny, and bellydance is a small world.

Re: Boobie Bra
I think it may be Shoshanna's Troupe: Shoshanna - Middle Eastern Dance Artist
I actually enjoyed this video in spite of the eye-catching bra. I'm not a big fan of tribal fusion style but I liked them. They weren't the most polished tribal fusion troupe I've ever seen but they had a quality that I can't quite name but that I liked - maybe it was the nice choice of music, and the fact that they weren't as hard-edged as many fusion groups.
No comment on the bra except that I don't think I would have made that costuming choice.Belly Dance to the Music of Americanistan

It just stood out to me....otherwise, I thought the dancers looked great!
Plus, I didn't know if maybe it was trend I was missing....The dancer cannot be separated from the dance, she also cannot be separated from the history of dancing, from the line of dancers and teachers leading to her.

Hmmm...wondering if it was intentionally meant to look like that??

Re: Boobie Bra
Oh, my. That is an unfortunate costuming choice. I actually don't care for any bra design that seems to accent or highlight or create targets out of the nipple area to begin with, but with that one, in particular, the colour choices really do create the optical illusion of nudity.

Re: Boobie Bra
How embarassing! I'm hoping it was just the lighting that makes it look like that? I can't image a dancer actually intentionally wearing something that looks like that!

Re: Boobie Bra
The dancing was fine, everyone did great. The bra, if intentional, was in horrid taste. If it wasn't intentional, I think the design was obvious enough to be considered in bad taste anyway...not a fan....

Re: Boobie Bra
I had to watch it on the big computer just to9 double check what I was seeing. because it sorta looked as though her choli might have ridden up. . .
Upon double checking, this is a Banjara style choli, probably yellow, with mirrors on the "nipple" area. Possibly other decoration on the "bra" part, but can't see it. Chances are, if she was wearing it in rehearsal under studio lights, it would have never occurred to her that there was potentially a problem. it isn't until she gets under lights and on camera that it is apparent that this might not be the best choice.
The dancing, as said above, was lovely.

Re: Boobie Bra
On a sidenote; Why do people get up and walk in front of the stage? I've seen it time and time again on videos...Really? Do you think they would do this in the middle of a ballet or musical?? So disrespectful. Even if I wasn't a belly dancer, I would not think to be that rude to any performance...

Re: Boobie Bra
It wouldn't be so bad if she could remove the "nipples." If she can't remove the decoration, then she could add extra ones to help disguise the target effect. Does anyone know this dancer? Can they help her out?

Re: Boobie Bra
I wish I knew, I hate it when I am watching a video and someone wanders in front of the person taking the video, and doubly hate it when I have been sitting in an uncomfortable seat for the better part of an hour waiting for a live performance, only to have some lout stand in front of me 30 seconds after the performance starts, and he/she/it isn't even WATCHING the stage, argh.
Recognizing that kids are can move like the wind when they want to, I didn't appreciate mommy not corralling that young lad after the first run across the stage either. There is a potential for injury there for sure, both with the dancers and the boy. Guess who would get mad if little timmy jr. got hurt, too? In a student rehearsal last year (at a restaurant, dry run for Canada Day) we actually had an incident where some wayward person who trusted we would veer out of her most magnificent way wandered through our class mid dance. She was actually warned not to, but nothing can happen, right? Nothing but a good clip up side the head when we did a fast group turn...

Re: Boobie Bra
fabrics can look very different under different lighting conditions, consider fabrics that look opaque in the store and suddenly become see-through on stage. add in the resolution of the camera and who knows what it really looked like in person.
i wonder if they even knew someone was filming, much less that it was posted to youtube.
although it does remind me of a Bal-Anat video my teacher shared with me that begins with a masked topless woman."there is a bit of insanity in dancing that does everyone a great deal of good" -Edwin Denby

Re: Boobie Bra
While my first thought is WOW! to me it looks like a choli with unfortunate pattern placement. Up close there may be a nice light pattern on the top but in the lights all fades away but the surrounding pattern and the nipples.
I once saw a performance of an amazing dancer who had on a peach costume. It zipped right in the back and the design pulled away from the zipper so that it looked like crack. Peachy crack right on her fanny. I couldn't look away and missed her wonderful dancing.
And this is why you tell your bellydance sisters...have you considered that under the right lights....The Bhuzer formerly known as Scarletdancer

Re: Boobie Bra
A good cautionary tale for costuming if I've ever seen one. I've changed my mind about choices of my own after standing across the room from the mirror to do a costume design check. I have personally banned anything remotely resembling crassels!

They did a lovely dance though...it's difficult getting everyone synchronised.Well behaved women rarely make history.

Re: Boobie Bra
Unfortunate choice of costume, IMO, and not flattering to her breast shape. However, I have seen beaded bras with a similar configuration... large reddish oval over the nipple area... always get disconcerted by that, too.

Re: Boobie Bra
It definitely happens to the best. I saw a well-known dancer in a gorgeous beaded/fringed number. The beading was silver on black and the backside had a huge spiralling pattern that dwindled down to a black unbeaded "hole" right exactly where...yes...just exactly there.

I think this serves as a good reminder to all of us to double check our costume, both with another dancer, and during dress rehearsal. Really, really shows the importance of dress rehearsal.
The dancer cannot be separated from the dance, she also cannot be separated from the history of dancing, from the line of dancers and teachers leading to her.

if I was the dancer I would have preferred a private email as opposed to being called out in a public forum

Re: Boobie Bra
I thought about that, BUT, I didn't call her out I just pointed it out. I think we all learned a lesson from it: dress rehearsal.
And, it was posted on youtube, so I cannot email her, nor did I feel it was "right" to comment on that there, as people who watch youtube aren't all belly dancers and it would have taken off in the wrong direction...That's what bhuz is for...to be constructive WITH our bd sisters!!!The dancer cannot be separated from the dance, she also cannot be separated from the history of dancing, from the line of dancers and teachers leading to her.

Re: Boobie Bra
Dunno if it's because I'm on my IPad, but the link to the video is gone, so I missed the costume in question. Did want to point out, though, uh, not my troupe. Other Shoshanna, just for the record, I'm sure she's awesome and all . . .

Nope, it's still there. And I think it's Shoshana Rose's troupe, Ya Habibi. So if any of the SF Bhuzzers know her. . .

Re: Boobie Bra
That style of choli doesn't bother me at all. The contrast (or lack thereof) between the very body conscious top and the very tight pants gives me pause. If that in your face womanly body armor top were paired with traditional ATS skirt, turban, harems, flowers and life threatening jewelry, the look would be beyond fetching. I find the cabaret bedlah much more distracting in the context of this choreography.
