"Doing the math" - great article!
Shibori Borealis posted a link to this on her facebook page... and it is SO relevant to dance. I might not particularly LIKE math, but I DO the math when it comes to business and math is my friend. :)
I wanted to share the article:

I'm really looking forward to the promised next post. I have no problem figuring out what I *should* be charging, but it is way more than what I think the local market will support. Finding the right market is what I really struggle with.

Re: "Doing the math" - great article!
That's what I stuggle with, both in dancing and in my various sewing/design projects. For costuming/couture, I am lucky enough to have as many commissions as I can handle right now, but for dance?
My target market used to be university students, switched to middle aged, middle class women with disposable income when I moved and another dancer started classes at the U, but that new demographic is holding on much tighter to that disposable income these days. For performance, I think this town is just too small to really support regular performances. Used to be able to circulate between a few restaurants, do a couple weddings, kids parties were big for a little while. Hard to hold out for the right market when so many markets are drying up and I just don't know how to find others. Most local bands have to travel to Seattle & beyond to find any kind of regular work, which adds to the expense, of course. I don't see that happening for a relatively unknown dancer.
