I concur - Square is awesome. :) I've had mine for nearly two months, and I've found both the app and the service to be really reliable - it does what it says it does, and I've encountered no weird hiccups, errors, or performance issues.

A friend of mine uses one of these when she does henna at various events. In an era where so many people no longer carry cash, it has been a life saver.

I'm on the Square bandwagon as well. Now my students can charge their class cards when before I wasn't doing quite enough business to justify signing up with a credit card processing company. Just used it tonight in fact!

I'm still thinking about it...for those who use it...do you charge a fee for credit cards?

Nope. You can't. I don't know if it's specifically illegal, but most credit card processing companies prohibit charging a different price for credit card transactions than you would for cash.

Paypal is the same way. I do see a lot of bellydance events that try to pass the paypal fees on to the customer, but it's a violation of their terms of service to do so. If you really want to cover the paypal fees, you have to charge everyone more, not just paypal customers.

Credit card and paypal transaction fees are simply a cost of doing business.

By most credit card company rules, you can't charge a fee for using the card, but you can offer a discount for paying in cash. This is the legal way that most small businesses pass the fees along to their customers. Make the regular price the credit price and the discount price the cash price. Page 5-19 of the mastercard agreement touches on this: http://www.mastercard.com/us/merchan...ual_public.pdf

I've been using square since it was released and it has worked great for me so far.

    Re: I love my square

I love my square, too! It's nice to be able to give folks the option of swiping a card or using a PayPal account. I've had accounts for wireless processing before, and the equipment was $800 and the monthly fees were $70 minimum. The square itself is free, and there aren't any batch or item fees.

I don't change my prices to reflect the credit card use. It's just a cost of doing business, and I consider it to be overhead.
