I'm looking into teaching for the first time at some local studios near my house; I'm very excited to share my passion with others! My question is when you decide that you want to approach say a dance studio owner, what should you wear? What is appropriate? I'm sure you don't wear a business suit? LOL What type of attire is acceptable yet professional looking for a bellydance instructor? Obviously I would have things like my business card, my lesson plans, dancer's resume, etc., ways to contact me. Just wondering how you would go about doing that. Any information is helpful! Thank you!![]()

Re: When looking to teach at a studio how do you present yourself?
You want to look professional and self-assured, whilst giving a nod to the fact that it's a health and entertainment industry, not an accountant's office. I'd go for something that's smart, form-fitting (if that flatters your figure) with a hint of bling. So for eg, well-fitted slacks or skirt, a nice quality stretch-knit top or not-quite-corporate jacket, and some sparkly earrings or a snazzy scarf or belt. Think of dressing up for dinner with your bellydancing buddies, after a day at the office.

Ok, thank you, that makes sense, LOL that gives me a better idea, I wanted to wear something that is stylish yet casual, but I don't want to walk in looking like I'm just coming from the gym either with sneakers and whatever LOL! Thanks so much!

Re: When looking to teach at a studio how do you present yourself?
When I got my job at the current studio I teach at I wore business attire if I remember correctly. Lets just say besides my resume speaking for itself (you NEED a professional dance resume, references, just like any job), I think looking like a professional sealed the deal. I'd rather 'overdress' than under dress. Just an opinion :)

Re: When looking to teach at a studio how do you present yourself?
Hi Minerva,
just found this one- hope your enjoying your search- I manage a dance studio in Boston so I have some tips from the other side of the desk. Check out the studio and what kind of classes they offer, their schedule etc. Call and see when they are there- my office is open when there are classes- and when it's not a zoo so you can actually visit for a moment with someone. If you are interested in renting for your class it does not matter much how you present yourself frankly as long as you look respectable and can pay the rent. If you want to be hired by the studio to teach as in you get paid a fixed hourly rate to teach then you need to go in with a conversation as to how you can add value to their class selections and if you can teach other dance forms, children etc. and sub for other classes that is huge plus. You would then be a faculty member ..... Best time to do this is NOW since most studios are planning their fall schedules now. Offer to teach a sample class for free, perform and teach a mini-lesson for their open house ...Good luck!
