Thread: How many belly dancers in America? The world?

Any one have any ideas? How would one even begin to find out?

I think to begin to find out you'd first have to set your parameters by which you identify someone as a bellydancer. Self-identified? Taking classes? Performing? Teaching? charging for performances?

Self-defined is fine in this instance (you could always segment further later). I'm looking for a big picture. They have interest, experience and would notice favorably something related to belly dance.

A. I'm curious.
B. I'm wondering how large our niche is.

With a narrower definition you could start looking into, say, numbers of studios/classes/teachers and such...although I think it would still be a huge undertaking. Self-identified...man...I've got no clue where that would start and think you'd be limited due to the language barriers.

There was a figure out there of a million that went WAY back, possibly to the 70s, but I have no idea where it came from or how accurate it was. I can't even remember where it was that I read it.

It's the $64,000 question, along with "how much money actually circulates in the global BD economy?"
