how to start a bellydance retreat
Sooo final day in Bali and of course this is just idea stage and we all know with Jes that ideas are like farts..there's plenty..
but wanted to toss out there and see if anyone here can offer tips on starting up a bellydance retreat, it would happen in Bali..would include bellydance workshops but also tours of Bali massage yoga etc..
again just an idea..we can call it Bali-wood :)

I know Mishaal is starting to do something like that, although I can only find the info in Japanese right now.

Re: how to start a bellydance retreat
I haven't done it, but I've thought about it often over the years and I know what tempts me as a participant. So take this with a grain of salt.
1) Advertise early. People need a year to think about travel, save up, etc.
2) a retreat is about 65% travel and 35% about the classes, so consider/sell the destination at least as much as the classes
3) Find GREAT deals for your group & sell the bargain of the group travel. I once went to a workshop where I'd never heard of a single teacher because I found out I could get an amazing rate on a beachfront hotel.. true story!
4) Offer a special deal for non-participants & leave your guests enough free time to hang with their spouse/friend/kids. (and make some of the events social)
5) For those who nervous about travel and/or didn't bring a guest, offer group guided activities at the destination, maybe as an optional extra.
6) The best travel/dance events offer a whole package of experiences. Tayyar's events in Istanbul offer a great assortment of classes AND a traditional Turkish steam bath AND tours AND shows, for instance, plus promises of delicious food.

Re: how to start a bellydance retreat
p.s. Jes - Bali is appealing and you gotta do what inspires you... but you might think about organizing one in Hawaii first, where you have the most connections/resources and can do it with less financial risk to yourself?
I think it should be an annual event and be aware you might just hope to break even the first year. Most of us look at those same retreats year after year before we decide to do it, and count on participant feedback for some of our decisions.
Another thought... if you can risk the funds, hire teachers with a following. We'll go anywhere to study with Aziza, or Sahra Saida, or Mahmoud Reda for instance.

Re: how to start a bellydance retreat
thanks you guys..just got home..
Ozma I was not able to connect with Mishaal just a timing thing but she'd be a great resource.
Lauren thank you..Delilah already does a Hawaii retreat..am heeding your advice. If Mishaal is trying to get one together in Bali I will connect with her and see if I can just help out.
It wouldn't appeal to everyone ..for sure.. not quite the same amenities as Hawaii :)
Yes i have a growing network in Bali, already know of a massage clinic and places to stay..just kicking around the idea. I was also informed they need a clinic nurse in Bali so opening a wellness center is of equal interest.
