I don't think it is good karma but it will probably wind up me living under Lower Wacker with the other bums.

Now, this is related both to the thread in the Teacher's Forum about the real cost of teaching, in that case the issue was a choreography; and also to Dima's thread about performance rates.

All I can say lately is aaarrgggghhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Times are hard.

In better times, my art has supported me. In harder times, I support it.

Beyond cyclical Hard Times, there are some structural issues that affect what we charge, if we charge, etc.

One is where we live. If we live in a wealthy suburb and our clients are rich, that's one thing. My motto is, sock it to 'em.

And, if people do have money and are, you should forgive the expression, belly dance dilletantes, they should take it easy on working artists and stop asking us for freebies all the time. In fact this includes my friend who thinks she can learn to watercolor by watching me just one time. For free of course.

OK, rant off.
