Thread: web sites for BD businesses

If you have a website that you depend on for your belly dance business i recommend you have two host services pointing to your website.

Recently, Avid Hosting, my web hosting service, went belly up and there i was with no website online. no info for days at avid hosting. now there is a form and a demand for $15 to release the domain name to next service.

I am not dependent on my website for my business, since most of my sales come from Ebay, so it is not hugely critical for me short term, but for those of you who are really out of the game without a website, you might consider the options for having several of them out there in cyberspace in the event one takes a nosedive.

I've heard that you can buy your domain name through services like AOL and Yahoo, that way you own it no matter who hosts your site, that really stinks that they held your domain hostage, bums!!

You're lucky it was only $15. Some domains are being bought up as soon as they expire just to be sold off at huge fees. It's like flipping real estate. A friend of mine accidently let her domain laspe only to see an invoice for $1800 if she wanted the same one back.

It's important that you make sure you are the owner of your name. I know a few hosting companies that will register your name for you and then hold it hostage so you don't leave them. I will often register domain names for my clients, but I am trustworthy and will put it in their name. But it never ceases to amaze me how few of my clients/potential clients so readily trust me in this regard--no questions asked. I guess I've seen too many bad circumstances to trust anyone to register a domain name for me.

I highly recomend Yahoo, it is only $12 a month and I dont think they will go belly up anytime soon (I hope)
