Ok, so I admit this thread is to brag a little, but mainly to let anyone who is feeling discouraged know that (as the thread is named) persistence and hard work DOES pay off! In a town with no dance opportunities, it took me 5 years and lots of rejection, but I finally found a regular, paid gig for myself and opened the door for all local dancers! We now have several local haflas, a full stage production, and a pretty awesome ME dance community.
As a side note, never take an opportunity for granted and NEVER EVER underestimate people. For this new restaurant gig, I was a little hesitant to perform in my city since it's very conservative and pretty religious. Judging on past experience, I was expecting a lackluster crowd and little to no tips. To my surprise, the gig was awesome! The crowd was amazing, the staff loved it, and I made a record number of tips.
In the end, if I would have followed my feeling on what I thought this experience would end up like, this opportunity would never have happened. It's a huge benchmark in our city and I hope dancers after me take a leap of faith as I did. Never give up!

Re: When persistence and hard work pays off
Hard work and persistence does pay off! Congratulations!
Banding together to work with other dancers is another good tech--several people together who share a passion can form a collective to share the load to take on things like approaching a venue, putting together shows, etc. I've been involved with a local organization for over 14 years and have seen amazing things come out of it.
