    Canada dance instructor insurance

    Hey everyone,
Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations regarding getting insurance as a dance instructor without a studio in Canada. I've found a few for the US, but nothing for Canadian dance instructors who work out of different studios. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

I don't have my policy here right now but I talked with my insurance company and got a fitness instructor's package that was only about $300 for the year. When I get time I'll look for more info. But that's a pretty good price!

My understanding is that the studio you teach at should have insurance, so technically you shouldn't have to carry any at all. I am insured under the studios, not on my own.

I'm renting out a studio space and the owner told me that I need my own insurance or she can't rent to me. ..c::

I think if the studio has employed you then you would be covered by their insurance but if you are just renting space from them for your own classes you need your own.

Hello Teresa. I have insurance with HKMB

It's a highly respected company in the world of dance, and I was able to get $2 million in liability for up to 50 students per class for $200/yr. (Also recommended by CADA, a Canadian dancer's alliance).

Our car/home/life broker charges $400/yr with an outside company for $1 million coverage, and he wasn't able to answer any questions or concerns I had. (Not something they deal with very often, apparently).

    Re: Canada dance instructor insurance

Some studios have insurance that will cover you, but that isn't always the case.

For example, I teach at a community centre in a nearby city and their insurance covers me. Most gym studios will require you to have your insurance if you are an independent instructor (ie you rent the space - they don't pay you), and I've had one dance studio ask me for insurance, and not another.

Whatever the case, for $200/yr, I'd sooner cover my fanny just incase! I can't imagine the thought of losing everything my husband and I have worked so hard to gain. (house, vehicles, savings, etc).

It also helps to have a disclaimer signed and include your own little Par-Q on it before their first class. (Pretty much a signed statement saying they have gained their physician's approval for taking your program, and requiring them to specify any health issues with you). Between us, it's not worth the paper it's written on, because legally it doesn't hold any ground, but it is a deterrent and will hold up in court as them having been made aware of any associated risks (assuming they're outlined).

    Of course, Elljay!
