wow, wowy, WOW! this is my first chance at seeing the web site of The Only Authentic Teacher in America - little did I know what I was missing out on!!! What's mystifying is clearly she has had SOMEONE speak up enough to have her flyers edited - there are some bits on that site that you can tell are flyers handed out, and those are passable in grammar and...y'know...not saying "flour words." *lol*
    She's really something, ain't she? Again...wow.

This reminds me of when I got my first look at the infamous coffee table!

Slave, I really wish you could have seen the old site. I think it's gone forever. It was just, uh, just too hard to explain.

Why on earth would you all spend so much time about this woman. She is only one person. Look at the attention you are giving her. If you don't like her website quite looking at it. LET GO AND LET LIVE. No matter who we experience in our bellydance life history we learn from "ONE WAY OR THE OTHER"

I don't know Jodette. Never met her. I have read some of her dodgy claims and seriously doubt that they're true.
However, most of the posts on this thread haven't been about her outlandish claims of being a famous dancer. They've just made fun of her bad spelling and her accent.
I've seen plenty of Americans (even on Bhuz) with countless spelling mistakes that are just as bad, even on their websites.
It's very difficult for an immigrant to learn to speak another language that is completely different in gramatical construction from their own, let alone write it. I admire people who have managed to learn to communicate in a second or even third language. Most people can only speak one.
I've also seen plenty of non spanish speakers just masacre the language when they try to speak it or write it, and would never dream of making fun of them or their efforts.

    Regards
    Priscilla

It's not necessarily the language, it's also the things that she does. I lived in Sacramento for a while, and was privileged enough to have "experienced" Jodette.

I don't know Jodette, I am usually the kind of person who doesn't make judgements of other people no matter what other people say. I like to experience the person first hand and draw my own conclusions. Many of the times I find that they are not as bad as others have made them out to be... Though Jodette may raise herself in High esteem as the only authentic teacher in America, I can't fault her for that. Belly dance world has become highly competitive and one must put their self above the others if they want to survive.

I may be a belly bunny, but in my eyes I'm the most spectacular belly dancer this nation has ever seen.... and if you haven't seen me then you need to bring me to your city to perform..... <giggles>..g.:

so who is the woman pictured on Jodette's website? And in her gallery? http://www.jodettes.com/photogallery/

Some of these look fairly recent, but she's supposed to be like 80 yrs old now?

I think she's 78 now, which is pretty close to 80. I kind of doubt that she has any recent pictures of herself in a costume.

You know, after having watched her come into the Cafe that we do shows at once every three months and take down our Oasis flyers (in front of us mind you) and put up her "class" flyers in their place. I don’t think sitting here and having an opinion about her is out of place. Personally I don’t think that she has done anything really spectacular for the dance community in Sacramento except allow new students dance at restaurants for 15 dollars for 4, 20 min sets, (true story just dealt w/ that in Davis). It's unfortunate that she has had so much bad press (in the community) however she's done it to herself. *shrugs*

    Mish Mish said it well.

I'm feeling a little bad now about the cheap shots at the spelling errors, so forgive me for my comments regarding that.

Unfortunately, to talk about the real crimes would be so emotional and horrendous it would make for a big, bad, ugly thread here on bhuz. And the truth is, you really couldn't comprehend what you'd hear unless you'd seen it or lived it yourself. So I guess some of us were snorting and snickering at what we could.

I would simply like to say, just trust us on this one. It's bad. Really, really bad.

If the horrible things that have occurred in Sacramento suddenly up & moved to anyone else's town, believe me, in 6 months, even the sweetest, most patient person would be crying and screaming about the injustice of it all.

I was talking to my husband about this thread, and he said this:
"If you dated a man that was a total jerk, abused you and used you, and then your sister met him and wanted to date him, would you not try to warn her?"

I wish I could explain the amount of hurt and damage done to our dance community. And it won't end any time soon. She has such a lock on local restaurants and had driven down the quality and the pay scale for all of us. I have pretty much given up.

It's so bad that some venues think you're nuts if you won't dance two sets for $25.

Actually, I think I misunderstood the flyer... to me, it read like it was $100 to enter a raffle, but based on everyone else's discussion, it sounds like it is $100 to enter a dance contest.

I would absolutely not pay $100 for the priviledge of watching someone else's name get drawn out of a hat, but if it's an actual competition, then the fee seems within the norm.

Wow, you can take classes for 3 months, once a week for $69! That's a bargain! I charge more than that for a 6 class session.

After $69 of lessons you can dance at a whole lot of restaurants and buy overpriced Turkish nightmare costumes from your teacher who will claim she made them herself.

Some of the pictures in her gallery appear to have her head pasted onto someone else's body. Didn't her old site have something about being sold to the Rom by her father?

I don't know her, only what I've heard on bhuz.
That is what happens in a community when just ONE person decides to seriously undercut, send out dancers un-trained, it can really ruin it for all.
Most restaurants are interested in the bottom line, if they can get a dancer for cheap, there you go.....
And the GP too, when they call for a bellydancer, most of the time they will go with the cheapest out there......

Jodette promotes being cheap, and doesn't care if the students are any good. She's only interested in their money.
