How would one wear this? Outside of the bedroom that is...

I have something similar, but it came with essentially a salwar kameez under layer as well which is a little less elaborate- so essentially this would be the over tunic. pretty, but I don't need it in my closet!

Guessing from the quality, I would imagine that this piece came with a matching undergarment that has since been separated from it--no idea whether the undergarment was physically attached to the outer layer at one time, though. I have a vintage chiffon tent dress that is probably a few years younger than this piece (based on the hem length), and it has a slip attached at the shoulder and arm seams. I also have a black lace blouse that was made in West Germany after the war that required you to find your own undercoverage. Sheer garments were clearly made in multiple ways back then.

ooh, with a simple shift dress underneath it might actually look quite nice.
