I don't think anyone uses just snaps, but the combination of snaps and hooks works especially well since they have two different failure mechanisms:
Snaps fail when the two pieces pull apart, but they prevent the two pieces from sliding from side to side. Hooks and eyes fail when the hook piece slides past the eye piece, but they keep the fabric from being lifted apart. The combination of the two together stabilizes the connection both from both sliding and separating apart. Each one basically prevents the other from failing.
