I don't make a point of trying to soften the angle. I just do the best I can to hem it neatly.

I concur with the suggestion of tissue lamé for double veil or silk for floaty wafting veil. Another good fabric can be double georgette. It all depends on what style of movement the workshop will focus on. I suggest contacting the workshop instructor or sponsor and asking what kind of fabric is recommended for this particular instructor's style.
