I actually have some gauntlets, they are so long, that I have to start them under my arm pit in order to fit from my arm pit to my wrists! I always wear my guantlets pretty high and never thought much of it. I would go ahead and wear them even if they are high. I don't think anyone will notice or be as conscientious about it as you are. Otherwise, if you happen to have some arm bands from another costume, you could wear the upper arms bands really high.
