I'm skeptical of trying to put martial arts katas into belly dance sword work, especially if the dancer has little to no martial arts experience. It's like any other fusion - you need to know both movement disciplines before fusing them, or else you just look like someone who's trying to do something she doesn't understand.
I've seen performances where the dancer was trying to wave her sword around like a weapon, and let's just say it was an idea that didn't work.
Now, I HAVE seen someone who studied martial arts, AND took her studies in martial arts seriously, who incorporated some katas into her belly dance performance. She is the only one I've seen whose sword-waving was worth watching.
