I think you are right, a lot of the prohibitions have to do with lawsuits and if people don't know the outcome or results or if the results haven't been studied on the fetus, etc... then they will err on the side of caution and just tell you to abstain since they don't know the effects. If you read the pregnancy books that you can buy in the store, they are very conservative and it makes sense that they take this approach. Also, a lot of women who drink beer will drink before they find out they are pregnant. A lot of women find out they are pregnant by having a missed period. This triggers them to take the pregnancy test and they find out that they are already 4-6 weeks pregnant. Its true that often the beer you drank or even drugs you took won't have any affect at that early stage. Regarding the stares you get, a lot of people just don't know how pregnant women are supposed to "behave" so they see you doing something that is contrary to what they think is correct (not that they know) and then they just give your stares. I read that ear plugs and mini blinds for your eyes should be essential wear in any pregnant women's daily maternity clothing!! I also knew mothers who smoked two packs of ciggarettes a day and still gave birth to healthy babies!! A lot of it is just about randomness and probability.

Ashadanzatrice I'm sooo there with you. BTW when are you due? I would never want to do anything to harm the baby before he was born or after but the list of no-no's is well...like I said I think a lot of it has to do with avoiding lawsuits. We all know the mom who drank a few before she found out she was pregnant..baby is fine. etc. I can tell you I am a lot more relaxed about this pregnancy than before ..the lack of stress alone is a big plus. I'm old and settled. Own a home, swim daily etc. My mom would love it if I parked on a couch and waited for the baby ..I think my doc would too :) I know preg women who ski, have had a few drinks, SURF (you should have seen the stares when I got out of the water last night during a five foot tall wave saga hehehe) . Not saying everyone should do those things. But yes I'm with you and in fact I've had soft serve a couple of times and adore Subway :)

i can make a mean spaghetti with a blast of red wine
