I had one of my choreography groups wear hip scarves like that for a tribal-esque number. The way I tied mine (long, rectangular, fairly wide) was to start by poney-tailing my hair and clipping it to the top of my head. Then, I would flip my head over and center the scarf (coins out) against the back of my head, just hitting the edge of the nape of my neck; after that, I would wrap the fabric tightly around my head (looks like an inverted V on your forehead) and then tie it tightly in the back. If you make sure to pull tightly around the edges, it shouldn't slip, but I know some of the girls used bobby or safety pins for extra security.
