That is what I do too if I am on a bigger stage. For closer performances, I wear one pair.
I just use what they have at Walgreens or similar. What I have now is "Ardell" and I use their eyelash glue as well. I would love to find some eyelash glue for more sensitive skin though. Most of them make my eyes water a little.
When I double them, I put a shorter pair, a demi Ardell #101 on top of a longer lash like Ardell #111. Then it is thicker at the base like one's natural lashes.
I also learned from a workshop I took a few years back to taper the lashes at the inside and outside corners more like one's own would be. The same instructor also said that sometime lashes may even need to have a little bit of length cut off depending on the size and shape of one's eye for a more natural look and feel.
