If you were trying to represent a dancer of the 40s or 50s, would you try to match the makeup to the costume?

I'm thinking about doing something like that for a spoofla, but I haven't the foggiest idea where to start researching how to do makeup of the 40s or 50s. Even my standard web references (like www.costumes.org) weren't much help.

Any ideas?
