Kevin Aucoin's "Making Faces" book covers retro glam Hollywood starlet looks. I would also suggest watching videos of the star you were most trying to emulate to pick up on certain things like how she lined her lips. (Naima Akef comes to mind as one who had almost a 30's era bee-stung look - the kind where the lips are drawn INSIDE the natural lipline so that the lips look like they are in a permanent pucker)
