I went through the exact same thing several years ago when I herniated two disks. Try doing some breathing exercises with light ab work. Will help with the stress level as well. The main thing is don't get yourself too stressed out over the bed rest. Steroids can really hype you up and make you jumpy, so focus on exercises that you can do while prone that will relieve some of that stress and keep your heartbeat down.
While I was on steroids and doing the bed rest thing I apparently made several people cry during phone conversations that honestly I can't remember even happening. Blamed it on "roid rage!"
