Zahra Zuhair just taught a class on this and I think Bea's description is spot-on. ZZ described it as a 4-yard piece of fabric that can be cotton, rayon, or silk for stage. The pins (Khlal) used are the decorative "tribal" style brooches that can be adapted from earrings or whatnot, and the head covering is a must (she ran a ribbon along a section of the long end of the folded square scarf to tie under her hair).
