I don't like using hot glue. I prefer using rubber cement. You need to be careful with the glue on stones however, because often, once they come off the metal backing also comes off and then the stone loses it color and shine.

I prefer to use sew on jewels whenever possible. They are a bit more pricey but they stay on better, last longer and best of all, can be re-used on another costume.
