The positive thing about "reputation" or "mojo" as it's called on other boards, is that it lets you see who is trolling. On bhuz, this hasn't been as big an issue of course, but on the politics boards - you need some measure.
It's a way for the community to show who the "trusted" participants are. But again, on bhuz, it's not been as big a deal - but who knows...it could become one!
