I got a couple of friend requests from people I don't really "know" recently, and they're just sitting there because I'm sort of waiting to see a post by these people or something. If someone gets banned (it's happened maybe twice in the past year or so) they disappear entirely. And, yes, there are a few merchants on the site who are trying to make friends with everyone so they can send you spam ads. The best thing to do if you don't want their PMs is to go to their profile and click on Block Sender in their contact panel. That will prevent them from contacting you. Since they do support the site with advertising, I don't feel justified in coming down hard on them.
