Well I've only seen her twice and both times she didn't do much dancing, more fluffing around her dancing boys... I would've Loved to see her dance like she is above live.
Would have given me a greater appreciation of her skills rather than her gravity defying boobs
Though I can tell ya, that is one sturdy, muscular woman.

Re: Asmahan
Lol... fake foliage and all. She was sort of tucked down and carried out looking like a pot plant by her pot plant porters where she emerged, blooming into brightly coloured being.
Gotta love Cairo!

Re: Asmahan
I saw her in Stockholm both in show and workshop. And I did not fell in love with her style, which surprised me. I had heard so much of her. She is beautiful, energetic and her body is dancing every minute I see her, even in the audience...but my soul does not respond.

I agree . . . she is the Bomb! I saw her in Cairo for the first time at the Nile Group Festival in April and her show was so much fun . . . being carried out as a Pharonic queen surrounded by her ancient egyptian entourage, lol! Yes, the dancing boys are fun too . . . each section of her show had a different theme along with the costumes and were whirlwinds of activities . . . very dramatic! I loved it all!

Have you seen her tiger routine? She truly is a dancing tiger!
I have about an hour long vcd of all Asmahan, plus a few other random clips (including the flower show--she's been doing that one for a while it seems), and it seems to me there's really two Asmahans, or she performs in two different modes. One is the flashy showgirl, with the flower petals, the dancing boys, the elaborate tableaux, etc. The other is a serious raqs sharqi dancer, without all the window dressing. Sometimes the two overlap a bit, sometimes they don't. Showgirl Asmahan is an entertainer with lots of flash and pizzazz but can in all honesty get a bit dull for a belly dancer viewer after a while. Raqs sharqi Asmahan imo is a total powerhouse dancer, very strong and emotional and really mesmerizing, at least for me.

Re: Asmahan
I think maybe I posted this clip before...very strong, wonderful dancer. The costume is actually a very bright royal blue with all rhinestone trim!

Re: Asmahan
given that her tummy is going up and down -v- side to side, looks like a freeze shimmy, but very tiny.

Re: Asmahan
I saw Asmahan for the first time last February on the Nile Maxim, an elegant dinner cruise ship operated by the Marriott Hotel. Asmahan is, as others have mentioned above, a powerful, engaging performer, well known for her artistic, fantastic entrances. Onstage she is extroverted and fiery and draws you into her performance with ease. Her technique, emotional expression and connection with the audience is superb. We were blown away! Offstage she has a strong, grounded presence, and is also gentle and humble. We exchanged a few words en español, her native language -- she is just delightful!
I'm looking forward to seeing her again in November!

Re: Asmahan
Anala, that first half of the first clip made me cry, actually;) I love her, she is such a strong and passionate dancer. And there is no one that can put on a show like she can, she actually changes her shows every 2 months, so she is quite a hard working woman.
As for the shimmy, she talked about that at her class at SBDF. She said that she is very relaxed (soft knees as I undertood it) and that you need to practice shimmy standing, walking, layering, sitting, etc, not just standint straight up.
And I can tell you that she is pure muscle, the choreo she did at SBDF wore me down, I was sore for a week, and she made it look so easy.

Re: Asmahan
Katja, I was there too and I looove her as well Were you in Oum Kolthoum class or the "veil" class with not so much veil? Wasn't it this choreo? She was just the most generous person ever. She was not afraid to say her opinion about how she thinks the dance should be but at the same time very careful not to disrespect other teachers at the festival. "I respect all the other teachers here, but I think this is right, this is MY way of doing it, and now you are in MY class so I want you to learn this way right now".
Oh and I love the way she removes her Isis wings. So secretly and without stopping the dance.

I was in the Oum Kolthoum class and all that floorwork with the figure 8 killed me;)
I have taken one class before with her, and yes, she is very generous and humble.
