Karim Nagi!
Ok, so I'm being a fangirl. ;)
All kidding aside, Karim was in Las Vegas this weekend teaching four different workshops, and it was just amazing. I learned SO much!!!!!!
For those who don't recognize the name, Karim Nagi is the creator of Turbo Tabla. ( www.turbotabla.com and www.karimnagi.com) He is a master percussionist, musician and dancer!
Not only is he an awesome musician and teacher, but he is a really nice guy, too.
Any other Karim fans out there?

Another Karim fangirl here! Does anyone know if there are any DVDs that feature him performing? He's such a lively and entertaining performer! His energy is contagious. I don't think I've ever smiled so much while watching a drummer or dancer as I did when I saw Karim perform.

Karim really does rock. I've learned a lot from him, about music, dance and even just human stuff. I only wish I got to see him more.

Shems took me to a performance of his in DC -- he's great, and I thought he was very funny too.

Nimah, I don't know of any performance DVD's yet...but that is something to put a bug in his ear about!!! ;)
There are one or two not so good quality youtube clips of him, but they aren't very long, and his personality doesn't come through...

Love me some Karim!! His stick class at the Heartland Dance Seminar was probably the most awesome stick workshop I've ever attended!!
Everything else I've learned from him has been most valuable too! Big fan here!

Re: Karim Nagi!
Ditto all of the above!
Yesterday was "Survey of Arabic Music", today "Maqam for Dancers", "Musicality for Dancers", and some stick-dance instruction. More to come tomorrow! I've learned so much already . . . and have laughed the whole way.
I strongly, absolutely, positively recommend his workshops, music, and any other chance you have to cross paths with him. I'm astounded that there aren't more people at the workshops/lectures I've been attending. They're missing out!

Re: Karim Nagi!
I DO love Karim Nagi. Last year, he came to the Midwest All-Star Bellydance show, and was amazing! Cool thing about him, too, is he seems so humble....even with all these girls giggling and drooling and following his every move at the Hafla and show;-)!!!!

Kiyanna! I was happy to see you at the Karim Nagi workshops this weekend in Richmond. I wasn't surprised at the attendance since there are TONS of workshops happening in the area and one has to choose what fits in one's schedule and budget. That said, however, those who couldn't make it missed out on some very basic Middle Eastern music concepts that can be put into practice right away in one's dance.
Anyway, Sunday turned out to be a cold, rainy, and windy day to be on a sailboat, and I missed the day's lectures for naught. Perhaps you'll fill me in the next time we meet......
I did end up performing in the Saturday night show, which was a thrill! Everyone's dancing was fun to watch, and Karim did several athletic and amazing drum solo/dance combos at the end.

Re: Karim Nagi!
It was great to see you, too! Yes, we are fortunate to have to pick and choose from the workshop options.
I am already looking forward to Karim Nagi returning to the area next year. I missed out on seeing him (and you!) perform last night.

He totally is...I've got the biggest rak-star crush on him, and he knows it, and he's totally sweet about it.
(of course, I'm also not dillusional enough to think that something would actually HAPPEN besides us being friends....) :)
lol
Can't wait for his classes at the Intensive in Sept!!!!!!!
