Re: Is this Randa Kamel? As a child?
Randa is the adult dancer in that clip, for sure. So fantastic! Thanks for the link.
Not sure who the kid is, but I saw her do the same thing (dance on the table) at the Ahlan wa Sahlan festival in 2002. It looked creepy here, to me, but when I saw her live I thought it was pretty cute (and she was not doing it while anyone was on stage, though she may not have been here, either). She also was in a dress, not a little bra. And the girl has the raqs baladi down, no doubt.
Anyway, the kid is not a young Randa. I am sure someone here knows who her auntie or granny is, though! :)

Re: Is this Randa Kamel? As a child?
I love the illusion of her costume! I didn't know it was a decorated body stocking until they did a close up. It makes her shimmies look wonderful.
That's a little off topic, but I just had to comment!

No, BDF, your comment is so valid! I remember when Randa's costuming was...well...let's just say she hadn't had Eman Zaki's yet. But they all worked with her moves and I would almost say enhanced them even more than the costumes she wears today.
*le sigh* love her...

Re: Is this Randa Kamel? As a child?
I've been dying for one of those costumes since seeing Jillilna in a very similar one (just the colors of the sequins and the skirt were different) on Hollywood Babylon.
Just lovely.
Now, I saw Raqia, Mahmoud Reda, and several other very well known dancers in the audience. Yikes!!!!!!

Re: Is this Randa Kamel? As a child?
It's Randa as an adult. I saw that performance at Ahlan Wa Sahlan - 2003 or 2004(?). I'll have to check the date in my trip diaries. The girl is Aida Nour's relative, her niece, I think, and she was dancing on the table while Randa was dancing on the stage. Raqia, Mahmoud Reda, Mo Geddawy, Aida Nour, Freiz, Saroya, Dandash, and more were there, sitting at the front tables. Randa danced beautifully, as usual - lovely!

Re: Is this Randa Kamel? As a child?
Does anyone know where I can find a biography of Randa? Don't know much about her, and am curious.
Thanks!

Re: Is this Randa Kamel? As a child?
Two things about the costume.....I think its a scream that it gets past the morality police...I wouldnt dare!!! Did you notice the waist band beneath the body stocking? Its faint, but I think she has on some sort of panty hose under the body stocking as well. Nope..its a gold waist chain...

That would be no underware...or commando as it is called now...I wonder why? Do commandos not wear underware? Does that make it faster to take a leak in a dangerous war zone?

I don't know whether a biography of her is published anywhere, but I can give you a little information. As a child, she studied ballet for many years, which is why her style has such a strong ballet-oriented aesthetic. When she became old enough to take a dance job, she joined one of the folk troupes and danced with them for some time. Someone (I forget who) took her aside and told her that she should forget about doing the folk troupe thing and pursue a career as an Oriental style dancer. So she decided to try it.
I first became aware of her on my second trip to Egypt, in 2003. I saw the performance in the clip, and instantly became a fan!

Re: Is this Randa Kamel? As a child?
Thank you for the tidbit, Shira.
I thought I recognized some classical training in her.
But everything else Oriental, man, she took my breath away (also back in 2003, though not as lucky as you to see her live!!), I thought she was an alien, I had never seen dancing like her's before!

No, Randa is currently not married. She told me. She has two children (two sons) from two previous marriages.

I'm told it reduces rashing when you're walking around in wet pants. Dry off faster when not wearing two layers. (sorry if that's TMI, definitely OT).
Thanks for re-posting this, Anala.

Hah! I've already used it in at least 3 non-bhuz conversations. | |
