ISO Shamadan for an Oval head.
Hey everyone,
I'm looking for a shamadan, but I need one that fits my oval head. Most I've tried are too shallow on the part that sits on your head (think watermelon, not pea).....any suggestions for finding one or anyone got one they are willing to part with?
Thanks so much!
Maha.

Ditto.
Just put it on and mold it to your head... Worked great for me!
If it's too shallow, maybe just make sure the one you buy is measured larger than the one you tried on so that you can play with the width?

Re: ISO Shamadan for an Oval head.
Yeah I totally tried that and have since sold that shamadan. No matter what it was sitting high on my head and just felt it needed to be an inch lower. Actually Hadia's fit me perfectly so I know there has to be one out there for me! I've considered buying a cheapo one and having the crown part custom made - but I will keep searching some more before I do that :)

I have one from the bellydancestore.... if you want to try it when you're down, you're welcome to!
I've since aquired Zorba's old silver one, and the crown on this is pretty big. I haven't used it yet and I have to unsauter the joint he made first, but I bet that would work well.
Zorba - where did you get this one? The silver one you sold to Ameera with the blue and silver ribbon?

Re: ISO Shamadan for an Oval head.
what if you take it into a business that does stuff like that... blacksmith ...machine shop, or a welder, heating and cooling, sheetmetal etc, and asked them to change the shape?

I didn't know she re-sold it. It came from Dahlal. How's it treating you?

Yup, and I love it! So far, so good. My husband was able to bend and thread me a new arm out of one of the rods you sent with it - he did a great job! But where you sautered it closed, I have to unsauter it. Not quite sure how to do that yet - I've been meaning to get out and buy a sautering iron but haven't yet. If you have any pointers about how to do that, I'd love to hear them!
I have the ribbon pulled off too because it won't match my costume and I had to get underneath it to see the sautering... it's a work in progress, but it'll be gorgeous when I'm done with it. I found some gorgeous black and pink ribbon to replace it with...

Re: ISO Shamadan for an Oval head.
A little soldering iron won't do it, it takes at least a 250 watt soldering GUN - or a small propane torch. I'd suggest taking it around to someone who can do it for you - not that its particularly hard, but anything that uses a fair amount of heat like that can be a bit on the hazardous side.
The other option is to contact Scheherezade and/or Dahlal and see if they have an "extra" crown lying around - that's how I got the crown for my new one that I built. In retrospect, I probably should have kept the crown on your Shemadan, and shipped out the unmodified one instead of modifying a second one.

Re: ISO Shamadan for an Oval head.
Adishakti, get some soldering tape to wick the soldering off the metal. It really works great. The tape is some kind of metal - brass or something I think, really soaks the stuff up. You have to heat the old solder and put the tape up to the melted solder so that it gets "soaked up".

I have never heard of this stuff before. I will have to remember it for other projects.

Thanks. That sounds like a good idea, but there are two pieces of metal between the solder, so I don't think that'll work. I may have to hound the guys in the shop at my hubby's work. A few lash bats and a plate of cookies ought to cut it!
