Many years ago, Sheque of Touch the Earth, I think Daveed of Turku and some of the Zafira girls had the idea to hold a "dance and drum" weekend at Sheque's farm sanctuary in VA. It was an amazing weekend of music, dance, classes, parties, friendship - and some time that weekend, the idea of Darboukastan was born - a home for those who share a love of music and dance. Every year, the first weekend in June, dancers and musicians from all over come together and celebrate Darboukastani Independence Days (DID). It is a wonderful event, and has a very special place in my heart. I don't think I can think of more warm and welcoming people than Sheque and his family. And, I still recall my very first hafla under the stars, with Turku (whom I had only known from CDs) playing.
