Hi there, from a student getting back in to dancing again
Hi there all of you. I'm Robie (Roberta) and I wanted to say hi and ask about if anyone is learning to dance without a teacher. I danced ages ago and am hoping to get back into it again. Thanks for letting me join up! I took "cabaret" classes, but I am also interested in Egyptian and Tribal. Thank you and nice to meet everyone!

I have not learned to dance without a teacher. I feel that a teacher is a very important part of learning the dance - in any form. I'm very fortunate to have wonderful teachers in both Oriental and Tribal Style bellydance.

I'm not a professional dancer, but I can say I haven't taken any formal classes. I attended a seminar, took a sample course, practiced like crazy, and watched countless Arab women do it...
What is your training background? That's a good question as to whether a teacher is necessary... I'm trying to convince myself that practice and experimentation will do the trick
You are about 2 yrs from me (Carbondale area). If you want to be on our mailing list for workshops and other events drop me an email. There are also dancers in Evansville. Aziyade (sp?) I think is in Evansville IN. I have not seen her dance but she seems very knowledgeable in online discussions.
Personally, I don't think anyone should be without a teacher or in the case of an advanced dancer at least a network of peers to provide coaching and comments. Even if you trained for years, you will need some coaching to correct deficiencies in posture you may have developed and someone to push you in new directions.
I have been dancing 10 years and I have teachers. Most of my teachers have been dancing 20 years and *they* have teachers.
