Hello from Kansas!

Hello!

I'm currently a college student in Animal Science/Wildlife Biology. I've been flirting around with belly dancing for several years now, but I always seem to run out of money or time and can never keep up with it! I'd like to get some videos to learn with when I can't attend lessons, but I never know which to get! Any hints or tips on self study are greatly appreciated!

Rachel

Re: Hello from Kansas!

For a start try 'Amira 101' DVD. In my view it is THE best basic belly dance video for beginners. It will give you a good solid foundation to work from. She stresses the correct posture - very important, and has a lovely warm, friendly teaching manner
.Amira - International Emissary of Dance
Good luck. A.

Re: Hello from Kansas!

Wlecome to bhuz!

I am in Carbondale, IL, and I have a friend who just moved her from Kansas. I am a grad studnet in biology, so I feel your lack of time/funds. They tell me that some day school ends, and we will have free time to dance!

Jillina's videos ar nice, if you want a full choreography. She breaks things down, and her choreographies are cute.

Re: Hello from Kansas!

If you already have your basics and just need to stay 'sharp' I love Nourhan Sharif's Bellydance Technique dvd to drill with -- she packs alot of technique in (she even works on hands.) Bellydance by Michelle's "Pop, Lock & Shimmy" is good and has real drills... I like "21 Shimmies & 1001 Variations with Leyla Jouvana" by IAMED also. None of these are geared to an absolute beginner and no video can replace actual class-time with an instructor who can see what you're doing; but these are good supplementals for when you just can't get there as often as you need to but don't want to let your technique slide.

Re: Hello from Kansas!

Yeah, I'm in Manhattan at KSU for another year an a half. Curse the dual major! ;)

Thanks for the info on the videos! I'll look into them. I've been using some of the ones off of Netflix, but I can't always use the entire video because some of the dvds are scratched! Definitely want to get my own copies when my hours pick up a little and the paychecks get bigger!

Thanks!

Hi Rachel! Welome to bhuz! Nice to see another Midwesterner here! (I'm in eastern Iowa.) Maybe I'll meet you someday at a Midwestern belly dance event!
