Hi everyone,

I need a Dvd with bellydance drills. Somthing thats going to kick my ass and get me motivated and hopefully loose some weight as well. I get easily bored and sick of stuff. Please help!

I have a shimmys one, its great but I want to mix it up a bit.
I have Ranya renee but its not drills. I want drills.

Im thinking of sadie and kayas or michelle joyce, or perhaps rachel brice. Do you have any of those, what are they like? Are there any others??

Worth a look if you want some new music for not much $.

Fifi Abdo - The Egyptian Star

I recently finished working with this DVD. It features 10 segments from one of Fifi's performances, including not only an Oum Kalthoum song but also several baladi pieces, not to mention a great deal of classic Egyptian orchestral music.

This video was wonderfully enjoyable. Anyone who says Fifi only does 4 moves needs to sit down and watch this video. I actually made a chart of which moves she does and how many times per piece she does them, which showed a quite a good variety. In addition, I charted which moves she did with which instrumental solos, and found it very helpful in learning more about dancing with the music (as Hossam Ramzy stresses).

The footage was high quality, unlike the grainy clips you might see on YouTube, and being able to see more clearly and watch a piece in its entirety was definitely worth the price. I highly recommend this video to anyone who is studying Egyptian style, Fifi Abdo in particular, or improvisation in general.

Watched Afrita Hanem starring Samia Gamal!

I ordered Afrita Hanem, starring Samia Gamal and Farid al-Atrache, from Netflix. I sat down with my 2 year old to watch it as soon as it came in the mail yesterday.

Now, let me preface this by saying that I'm already a fan of black and white 1940's and 1950's movies from Hollywood. So maybe I'm already favorably disposed toward the Golden Age. But I thought this movie was wonderfully funny and very, very, accessible. I was surprised to find that there really wasn't much of a culture gap- I was able to understand what the characters were doing and why they were doing it- and it made sense all the way through.

As for the dancing- wow! Things sure have changed. Samia just swans her movements around and it doesn't look so "technical" as many modern dancers do. I found myself concentrating less on the particular movements and just taking in her gracefulness as a complete picture.

I have to say that seeing her dance around Farid while he was singing and I could see the subtitled lyrics was really an eye-opener regarding dancing to the music.

If you've seen the classic movies with Bing Crosby as a smooth crooner and Bob Hope as comic relief, you'll recognize the same dynamic in Afrita Hanem.

It's on Netflix! Check it out!

YouTube is great, but I would like to have something I can play on the TV in other rooms than the office. :)

I'm looking for the Samia/Tahia era, and very interested in seeing the lesser known dancers as well.

Here are the collections I've found online so far:

Sausan Academy: Store
Dance in Egyptian Film series at $25 per video (each video features a particular star)

Hossam Ramzy - The Stars of Egypt ®
The Stars of Egypt series on Hossam Ramzy's site, $30 each (each video features either a single star or a collection of lesser knowns)

Various Artists - The Legends of Belly Dance (1947-1976) #01DB1000051
The Legends of Belly Dance contains later footage as well, which is neat, but not really what I wanted to focus on at this time. $20 for one DVD.

So, what would give me the most bang for my buck? I can only buy about $50 worth of stuff right now. Are there any other collections you can suggest?

:up::up::up::up:

Four Zills UP!

I've ordered hip scarves and small items before, but several weeks ago I ordered a full costume from them for the first time. It's a coin bedlah, similar to the American Icon but (I hope) more durable and with fringe.

The costume was custom made for me for under $300 and promised to arrive in 4-5 weeks. I received an e-mail notifying me when it shipped, with tracking info. It arrived promptly in exactly 5 weeks.

It fits perfectly straight out of the package. I don't have to move a single hook.

It's even prettier than I expected, and looks like it will be durable. I always heard the KOTN costumes are sturdy, so I'm hoping for the best!!! I thought I'd want to add more fringe, based on the picture, but the fringe is just fine on my costume. I also didn't expect the row of large coins along the bottom edge of the belt that make a rich wind-chime sound when I move. Cool!

I'm very very pleased, I think I have a little workhorse of a costume here for a great price. I've wanted a coin bedlah for years, this is the perfect costume for parties!

It's getting so hard to find bra/belt sets these days, but I'm a relic. I think they flatter my figure much more than the sleek Lycra sets, and I love being able to interchange skirts and get different looks.

A highly recommended vendor!

(the costume is this one, the belt fringe is denser than in the pics)

I love that you can view from the front the back or the side. (This has really helped me to have an awareness of posture) I also love that it was only $15 with free shipping.

Definitely an under hyped DVD. I hope that Azhia has more DVD's headed our way in the future because both of her current DVD's are fantastic! ..g.:
