Dumb Gauntlet Question
I bought that nice black dress that scooby had listed. Here's my issue - I will need to wear gauntlets for an upcoming performance because it is doubtful that my exercising will have affected the offending arm flab within one month.
Am I going to look like an old man with his pants hiked up too high if I wear my gauntlets just under the arm pit? Me thinks "yes." What is the right level for the top of the gauntlet? If it's just above the elbow, that does me now good whatsoever.

My personal opinion, the gauntlets up top will not look good. I'm sure your arms are not as bad as you think they are.
I think wrist cuffs or gauntlets worn below or just above the elbow will be your best bet! What about lots of bangles!
BTW, I have pointy elbows, and when I don't have gauntlets on, I wear lots of bangles so it distracts from my pointy elbows, which, of course, no one notices my pointy elbows but me!

You can make ones specifically for the upper arms with a nice drape off the end. More like detached sleeves. Easy to make.

Yes! Great idea, i've seen those, they are awesome.
I know the costume goddess has some patterns on shira's site I think, and a book.
I also love the ones with the drapey sleeves that attach from upper arm to wrist. I wish I could sew, I would make those for almost every costume I own.
But, I am the self-proclaimed "World's Worst Sewer"
Literally. I do not have the patience.

Well for me I have no choice. My gauntlets go all the way up to cover up my tattoos.

I'd say go for armbands that only cover from armpit to elbow or armpit to mid-forearm. I wouldn't go all the way down to the wrist/upper hand area.

Yeah, armbands from the armpit to above the elbow. Just 3 or 4 inches wide. Those look really nice.

Dani, Fahtiem wears them all the way up and I've seen others do it also. I like the extra long tribal ones from LRose worn all the way up. Rain

Good advice.
Thanks for the input, people. I'll see what looks best on me. I tried some of the smaller L.Rose arm bands and thought they looked too political-protest-like. Plus, they drew more attention as spots of color there on the bicep.
Then again, maybe I'll just wear a long-sleeved galabiya until the bare arms look toned and tanned. Prolly the best solution all around.

Dani, I like vests with sleeves. Makes me feel more generally-covered anyway. I just bought this one from modemystique.com for $25 in fuschia & I love it -- I'm going to cut away the ties & add hooks. An L. Rose underbust U top with sleeves is pretty, too.

Our troupe has black velvet guantlets that go all the way up from hand to armpit and they are elegant, but I find them kinda warm. Have you tried the metalskin or halograhic ones in gold, silver or copper? They look better IMO, and for some reason do not feel as warm as they velvet ones. Plus, the velvet ones get caught up on veils, especially, silk veils.
I like wearing at least cuffs on my forearms that match my skirt - really completes a bra/belt/skirt look and offsets upper arms which are kinda roundy, althought not saggy.
I also like the idea of arm bands with drapes they are really lovely and L.Rose makes them in any velvet or metalskin or halo fabri you want with a wide choice of chiffon drapes. Just be careful with the really long drapes if you do veil work. I have a couple of sets in the "chiffon square" drapes - best of both worlds.
--Nisima
P.S. I do not personally, know a single dancer (and I'm talking whippersnappers of 25 years old) who doesn't think they have *some* problem with arms that a couple of bangles isn't going to offset. Most dancers do look better with more arm treatment if for no other reason than to balance the bra/belt "bigger than life" costuming. It's all about balancing the costume, just like the whole "long-hair vs. short hair issue" - if short hair, need to add very long earrings or a glitzy head band so head doesn't disappear into neck and all anyone can see is this big beady bedlah. Well, I'm exaggerating and besides that's another thread, hmmm maybe I'll start it up.

yep.
Most people worry about lack of tone in their arms - but mine isn't an imagined worry - I wish it was. there's a picture of me sleeveless in my gallery and you can see what I mean. I was fairly horrified at my weight gain in those pics - ...wish I could simply hide the rest of that issue with a well-placed arm band!

I actually have some gauntlets, they are so long, that I have to start them under my arm pit in order to fit from my arm pit to my wrists! I always wear my guantlets pretty high and never thought much of it. I would go ahead and wear them even if they are high. I don't think anyone will notice or be as conscientious about it as you are. Otherwise, if you happen to have some arm bands from another costume, you could wear the upper arms bands really high.

I actually prefer to wear my gauntlets pretty long - at the least, so they're as high up as the top of my bra side when my arm is down.
experiment and see what looks best on you. a dancer I know who has boney, pointy, flappy arms (sounds worse in writing than it looks!), looks great in gauntlets that go up to, but not over, her elbows.

I have several full length gauntlets that go all the way up to the armpit for just the same reason. I think they have an elegant look and it's all about wearing what you feel comfortable dancing in. If you are self-conscious about your arms (like me), you will probably dance more confidently if they are covered.
I also have some shorter ones that are just from the armpit to the elbow, they are cooler and do the trick just as well.

i always wear something on my arm- armband, bracelets, something! when i don't, i look at the pictures and think.... ew... my arms are way too white and way too long.
even if you end up with gauntlets all the way up to the armpit, there is nothing to keep you from getting some rhinestone stretch bracelets and putting them on top. the sparkle will distract and it's very glamorous looking.

my last two Paharonics costumes...one had very long gauntlets (looks very elegant), the other had the COOLEST shrug thing (Simply Devine on Dahlal). I want shrugs for ALL of my costumes!

I'm short and would rather keep cross-body lines to a minimum, so although I'm not self-conscious about my arms (hmm, the right to bare arms?) I often wear long armpit-to-wrist gauntlets just for the elegant line.

I agree with Elisa: I guess I wear all my gauntlets really long because all of my costumes came with super long gauntlets (perhaps the designers thought my arms were longer than they actually are). My phaoronics and Eman costumes have very long gauntlets. But for my Hallahs and Sahars, its a non-issue since they make upper arm bands instead. But I am still prone to wearing the arm bands super high.

Eeeek! No wrist cuffs, or any hard metal on the upper arm. I am horribly self-conscious about my arms and metal bangles will just bite into my flab. Also, big cuffs at the wrist cut of your arm and actually make it look shorter. Long gloves will elongate the arm, even if they're warm. It's the very same reason I never wear those ankle cuffs. I already suffer from an acute case of cankle, and a big band around my ankle will make it look even more stumpy.
Oh, to think of the money I have spent on cosmetic surgery consultations that i should have just spent on more gloves!
