And just when I think I'm feeling good about myself, along comes a polariod pic someone snapped of me and I swear I have a chin to match my original chin, now.
When the eff did that happen?
Photos are just terrible ego killers.

people taking random shots always seem to get us when we're pulling our chin down into our chest or raising our arm to just the right level for the flabby chickenwing effect or the like.
don't be too crushed - random shots are rarely good!

Random thoughts on weight fluctuations
Last night I was bad. I admit it. I had a glass and a half of wine and some shrimp in the shell that were marinated in some kind of oil & garlic.
I only had 3 shrimp but the wine was so good .... ahhhhhhh .... it's been weeks without wine.
Anyway, when I got on the scale this morning I was 1 pound heavier. Okay, fair enough - water retention, I'm okay with that - back on perfect track today, no wine just water and tea and coffee & my "official food"
Instead of feeling totally defeated, I realized that if I can adopt this attitude from now on, this will be a good thing. Overindulge or "cheat" one night or day - spend the next two being an angel and being healthy - better for the body anyway. This isn't a race for anything...it's about long term balancing.
So I guess this marks the first time that I haven't berated myself to the point of just binging my butt off with a "I screwed up anyway who cares - pass the peanut M&Ms." I feel like that's progress.

Dani--that's pretty much what has been working for me. I'm not always successful, for sure, but I try look at it the way you describe. It's helped me keep off all but 5lbs of my weight watcher loss in '05. In times of stress (like, uh, NOW), I really like my wine and my big dinners and eating out, but I don't seem to go overboard repeatedly like I used to do.
If I had fun last night (wine/cheese/salt and pepper chips the evil temptation food from hell), then I have to rein it in today. Water water water and whole, healthy good for me stuff.
I'm really trying to ditch my hazelnut creamer because it has transfat, which, according to Dr. Oz, is like putting candlewax in my arteries.
Uh, not worth dying for hazelnut creamer.

Mishy,
Can you use sugar free hazlenut torani syrup (buy it at WorldMarket/CostPlus) and then just milk of your choosing? then you can indulge but be safe (sorta).
I was good today - but it's going to be nothing but stress for two weeks while I finish my final papers. I will stock up on berries and tea this weekend for the long nights and power study sessions ahead.
I just want it to be over!

I don't see a few shrimp with oil and a glass of wine as a major screw up, so I'm glad you're not berating yourself, Dani! Even on days when I've eaten like an angel, sometimes the scale will register a pound heavier in the morning - various factors. There are also those mornings when I cringe as I step on the scale because I ate ice cream, and come to find I'm a pound lighter, and I'm sure that's not due to the ice cream! The scale does give good feedback on general progress, but I try to avoid letting minor fluctuations get me down (though they sometimes do anyway!)
I just realized I spelled macchiato wrong on the previous page..duh, yeah I own a coffeehouse! Oh well - I'm the spelling bee whiz in my household, guess I got knocked down a peg on that one...

Lilla -
Yes of course you are so right. I know that I shouldn't weigh in between "official weigh in days" - but the scale keeps me honest. I went for several years just not weighing to avoid the reality (it worked!). I'm paying attention to my clothing and general feeling.
Funny, but I know when my body is heavier even by a pound or too. It's that bloaty feeling. I'm sure by tomorrow's weigh in I'll at least be at the weight I was last weekend. In fact, I had predicted that I'd probably only lose a half pound this week.

For years I never weighed myself either, because I believed that constant weighing just makes one neurotic about their weight, and I just went by how my clothes fit me, which can work well enough when your weight is really stable.
But I did read recently that those who weigh in daily are more successful at maintaining weight and losing weight than those who weigh weekly, or avoid the scale. I'm sure that's not always the case, but I have noticed in recent years (now that maintaining my desired weight is not entirely a no-brainer like it used to be) that if I avoid the scale, I will unconsciously start wearing different clothes when I put on a few pounds, so that I don't really have to be aware that my "skinny" pants aren't fitting me. I guess my clever brain goes, "hmmm... pants too tight? Wear something else!" and then a few months later lo and behold, I'm 7 pounds heavier than I was, but I've been avoiding facing it. The scale doesn't allow me to avoid! LOL

so strange
Today, I got on the scale, I weigh 140. Can I really fluctuate 8 lbs? I wonder if Im allergic to wheat gluten and when I eat a lot of breads and stuff, If thats making me bloated. I have TONS of allergies, but havent been tested since I was like, four.
I have been eating really clean the past few days. No processed snacks, small meals several times a day. ???? shrugs.

Sumaya, yeah, water retention - that time of the month and so on. 8 pounds is a big fluctuation though.
As far as wheat allergy - I think it's the rare person who ISN'T allergic to wheat. Most likely you are. Bready foods bloat me all to hell and back.

Last year my accupuncturist suggested that I try giving up wheat and dairy, just to see what the reaction was. The difference was amazing. I hadn't realized I was bloated, and getting rid of that was great! Also lost some weight almost immediately. Since that time, I've tried to be really aware of how my body reacts to certain foods, meal size/frequency, etc. Anyway, spelt bread and pasta are pretty good.

It feels soooooo great to finally be making progress again after being stuck so long!

Sumaya, insulin causes water retention big time. When you eat alot of heavy carbs, your body is going to produce more insulin. If you are insulin resistant, your body will produce even more. So carbs can cause an immediate weight gain through water retention in the short term, and of course in the long term causes fat gain as well, because insulin directs the body to make fat out of extra carbs. If your body doesn't use carbs well for immediate energy use, most will get turned into fat.

I'm down by one more pound since Friday, so three down from my "OMG when did I get to this weight" moment a couple of weeks ago.
I think for me, mindless snacking is what mostly leads to weight gain, so changing my snacking habits alone will make me lose weight, which is what I've primarily focused on. Just have to stick with it!
I'm prepared for those plateaus, though... they always happen! Usually for me if I'm working really hard on eating right, at some point I'll go through a couple of weeks at the same weight, and then suddenly one day it breaks through. What I try to do when I step on the scale and see the same weight is tell myself, "oh good - one day closer to that breakthrough!" and stick to my eating plan. Otherwise, those can be moments that make me want to say "oh, forget it....." LOL

I simply cannot eat carbs. I get extremely bloated. And, of course, I luv bread and pasta.
I gave up carbs a year ago and lost 10 lbs quickly.
I would personally like to lose another 10. I just got a pink madame abla in the mail, and it would be perfect fit with another 10 lbs off. This has to be the hardest last 10 lbs I have ever had to lose.
I've given up: carbs, candy, lattes. I don't know what else to give up....
portion control is the key, i'm thinkin'.

Maybe I'm not supposed to but...
I weigh almost every morning. It sets the eating tone for the day, not my emotional state. If I ate a lot of salty food or had wine, it shows and I take steps to be healthier that day. I also see when I fluctuate and I can see how certain eating patterns lead to water retention.
I do not weigh myself more than that or at any time in the day--just in the morning. I am usually wearing similar clothes--I haven't eaten in about 12 hours and I feel like it's a fair assessment of where I'm at. It's also before I have made my eating choices for the day. I also think about what I plan to eat for the day and what challenges I may face--feeling tired/PMS-y/stressed /work potluck/etc. It has kept me on track.
If I skip the weigh-in, I do what Lilla describes. Start wearing the looser clothes and avoiding things that reveal that I am gaining!! Not good and you can't fool mother nature.
