Calories?

Hi all! Testing the waters with the new forums! I'm excited!

Here's my question. How do you figure out how many calories you burn while walking, dancing, typing, etc? I'm going to try something new and different, and I need to figure out how many calories I need to consume in order to lose weight.

I hate that I've put so much weight back on and I'm done being overweight!

Any tips would be great. :) I'm drinking just water today (no soda and NO COFFEE! I even skipped starbucks!) and trying to eat small portions of healthy food. Hard to do when there's free candy in the kitchen of my office.

the web

Yasmindiab,

Programs like Fitday have calculators built in. There are several web-based counters you can use. Just google for "Calories burned" or such & you should get several.

I like fitday but someone posted a good alternative on the other board - can't remember who now.

I guess we should ask my boyfriend... Since he's started his midlife crisis, he knows the amount of calories of EVERY bit of food he eats!
But he also knows how much he burns when jogging, swimming or cycling. (Yeah, at least he has muscles now!)
I think it's with the help of Nike+ gadgets. You attach an iPod to your Nike sneakers and it will record the amounts of steps you run and how far etc. (Details on the Nike website).

I never wanted to know all this in detail, really. And I also think that how many calories you burn depends on each person. I mean, if you are short or tall etc. must certainly have an influence?

I believe in Sparkpeople.com they have a fitness chart with a vast amount of activities in it. And I think it might take into acount your height and weight, but I am not sure..I know Balance Log does. But those programs make me crazy. Today I am fasting. It's only 10. I am already out of my head!

I use Sparkpeople. I like it, though I'm less active on the website than I used to be. In fact, the non-functionality of their forums turned me off, on top of all of the people whining "I was powerless over the box of cookies! I couldn't help it!" Mistakes happen. You chose to eat the whole box of cookies - Now chose to quit buying the darn things in the first place. And quit whining. Grr. The place is just too full of self-pity.

Yeah...I don't do that. Mine is a "Dang it! I guess slacking off really does hurt. I'm so sick of being fat! I'm going to do something about it!"

*side note* I do not think of myself as obesely huge. I just hate that none of my pants fit anymore!

That's exactly the reason why I couldn't post there. It's just like, you're human. So you decided to have that box. Big deal. Everything you've worked hard for will not be undone so quickly.

But don't you understand, it was a giant setback! It's all over! Why bother?! My one mistake doomed me to a forever of fatness, I might as well eat another box of oroes because I'll never be able to talk back to the cookies! I'm powerless, I tell you, powerless! ;)

thedailyplate.com is a good resource for tracking stuff. They have you enter some measurements in addition to your weight and height. Also, you might consider picking up a pedometer. I wore one for a while when I performed and sent the numbers flying. It'll inspire you to do longer, harder drum solos. Hahahahahaha....

I actually get a free pedometer in a couple weeks here at work. I've been taking long walks on my lunch hour...like from Bellagio to Treasure Island and back and from Bellagio to NYNY and back. (I work at Bellagio)...its really good exercise, and the weather is ok...for now. It will be too hot to do that soon, but...I'll find an alternative. :)

I'll check out dailyplate. Thanks!
