So... dyeing assuit?
Is it a bad idea? Or a really, really horrible idea?
... cause I kinda want to, but I feel like I really oughtn't.

I know that Bahaia dyed some white assuit lavender a while back. I don't know what dye she used, it may have just been RIT. It came out beautifully, as I recall.

I've dyed antique assuit with procion mx dyes, available from www.dharmatrading.com
I dyed the pieces in a 5 gallon bucket. Handle the wet assuit carefully. You'll have to rearrange the fabric carefully during the dye process so it dyes evenly. After dying, rinse it in the sink, blot it out with towels, and dry it flat on towels.

Of course you can! My friend has a fabulous sunflower yellow dress made of antique assuit, that was originally white.

Are you asking because you want to dye the assuit and then make a costume from scratch? If so, depending on your time and money, you may want to consider having a costume made. Eman Zaki can custom make an assuit costume for between $300-$400 and she works with a variety of colors you can choose from...

I just want to make a bra and panel skirt (to wear over another skirt), nothing I haven't done before.

Oh, okay, then since you know how to do this, its better you make it yourself, I thought you were looking for a full costume that's why I was going to suggest ordering one.

No, I never actually got around to that project. Long story short, it was going to be for a performance that I backed out of due to a total lack of communication on the part of the organizer. Seeing the thread reminded me of how great it was going to look, though. :) Maybe I'll get to work on it after finishing my Halloween costume.

If you do get around to it, be sure to post your results. I am still debating what color I want to use and when to attempt it . . . maybe soon . . maybe later.

My friend dyed some antique assuit from white (I think) to black and it came out gorgeous. Plus, dying it somehow freshened and brightened the silver!

Here at RakEast, Scheherezade Imports has some great dyed assuit, including a vibrant orange. I'm not sure if it's panels or dresses.
