Silk Static Cling

Does anyone have advice for getting static out of silk veils?

I don't want to spray them with anything: I'm afraid that will ruin the dye pattern. One of my friends suggested rubbing them with a Bounce sheet, which I tried. It actually seemed to help, but that could be a figment of my imagination. The whole process seemed a little mystical.

Tips? Suggestions?

Yes, run a fabric softener sheet (Bounce) across it. That's a safe way to do it.

Yup, if you don't wat to spray with that Static Guard stuff, then rubbing with dryer sheets is the way to go. I think it leaves a tiny bit of fabric softener behind that prevents static charge from building up on the veil.

I have never had any problem using a light spray of static guard on my dyed silk. Most of the dyes used are fiber reactive meaning they are chemically bonded to the fibers at the molecular level and are not going to run.

You can also try misting lightly with water.

I did run into a problem once using dryer sheets. I fluffed some veils in the dryer with a bounce sheet and got stiff waxy stains on the veils.

You'll be totally fine using static guard spray on an Akai..you can hang them over a shower curtain or doorway and lightly mist them..won't hurt them at all..

Avoid ironing the veil the day of your performance, especially if it's silk. When I try to iron my silk veils, they end up sticking to the ironing board! :P

Hang your veil up somewhere in the bathroom when you take a shower the day of your performance. The steam permeates the fabric and helps combat static cling.

Just before you hit the stage, run your veil through an all-metal wire hanger. Grab one end and pull it through the hanger, letting the veil run across the metal. The metal grabs all the excess electrons; you'll hear the snap crackle pop!
