This is something I think I have been trying to do my whole life. It usually works out, then some kind of stress happens in my life and I eat away. I have also noticed that the foods I have been eating have been catching up with me. Possibly, because I just turned thirty this year.

This last thing, was Jenny Craig. I worked hard to loose the inches and weight I did, but I got sick of eating the food and gained most of my weight back.

So here I go again back on the weight loss battle. I need to learn to do it the right way in order to lose it and not mess up in the end. So far so good.

-- Cheerios with 1% milk
-- one small apple
-- Big salad with low-fat dressing (cucumbers, tomatoes, fresh peppers, carrots, chickpeas, and small handful of cashews on top)
-- One cup lowfat yogurt with frozen non sweetened cherries and raspberries
-- Small bag pretzels
-- Three cups black coffee

What the????
that sounds about right, cashews are high in fat and calories, as well as dairy even if it says low fat the calories are still pretty high, becareful with the pretzels they have a lot of salt, a ton of carbs, and i bet that is what brought the calories up.

oh and dont hate me for saying this but that is a very unbalenced diet. Where is the protine? the only one you have is the cashews which is very high in fat. Pure Protine builds muscle, carbs build fat, dairy can also be stored as fat, fruit is high in sugar, which can also be stored as fat,and dressing is just a waist of calories. Your salad is all veggies which is great yes they are considered GOOD carbs ( which do not build fat) but the pretzels, and the cheerios do. Dairy is good for you but in moderation. you have 2 dairy, still no protine. YOU HAVE TO HAVE PROTINE WITH EVERY MEAL so you have....

2 dairy
3 carbs (bad)
1 protine (fatty)
6 carbs (good)

Try this (split evenly for all meals)

4 protine (non fat like chicken breast or almonds)
1 dairy (non fat)
3-6 veggies/fruit (veggies are better)
grainy carbs (oat meal, grains etc)
and NO bad carbs....

NOTHING PROCESSED, like cheerios, eat clean meaning nothing in a box, can, or container (there are exceptions to this) nothing processed and nothing with high fructose corn syrup. this actually can slow the metabolism down and is one of the top causes of obesity. If you have the choice to choose jelly or organic jelly go with the organic. instead of the new your strip go with the eye of round. Small changes like this will really make a difference. I hope you all dont mind me sharing my very strong views on how to eat....if any one wants help making a diet that will work, i can give advice and help you make one. last year i weighed 185 at 45% bf this year i weigh 140 at 19% bf. i have managed to move twice, and got though christmas and thanksgiving and still keep it off.....

Lucy - I know that you are a vegetarian as well and Al's chiropractor and nutritionist told me that I am having so much trouble losing weight because I don't consume enough protein. So, I have started drinking low carb, low calorie protein shakes or eating protein bars. (No, that is not all I eat!! I have those as a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack.) I won't kid you - the protein shakes are not all that great, but they are not horrible. They kind of taste like SlimFast shakes... I have two shakes or two bars a day. They make both whey and soy protein shakes/bars.

Al and I also joined a gym - we met with a personal trainer and that was fun, let me tell you! Nothing like finding out your body fat percentage!!! Yikes! And of course, getting on the scale during period week is frightening. I was 5 pounds heavier than I was last week!!!

I will keep you posted on our progress. Al wants to lose 40 pounds!!! Me...10-15.

Diet Group

People,

I started a diet group in the Groups section as so many of us are always on one! or at least, trying to be on one...Go join if you want a daily place to carry on about dieting. Since the groups work kind of like a blog - it's a good format for sharing diet drama.

Yeah, I know I probably need more protein, but as a weggetarian, it can be difficult. I do what I can - most of my cereals are soy based - but I just can't stomach eating meat. Yuck.

And I'm sorry, Cheerios hardly qualify as processed junk food. They have fiber and I will NOT apologize for eating them EVER!

No need to apologise for eating cheerios ( but they are processed) I have a huge week spot for brownies and ice cream and it cant get more processed than that, but to loose weight and keep it off you have to eat clean.

Good sources of protine (not meat)

tofu
almonds
whey protine powder
fat free cottage cheese

those 4 are the best to eat when trying to loose weight other nuts are good too but not as good as almonds.

I agree, but they have nutritional value and are not in the same category as potato chips, ding dongs, etc.

I've been veg ( but not vegan) since age 14 and getting that protein just takes some retraining. I had a few problems with iron, but never protein.

Currently I live in a country that is not veg friendly...period, so I pack a home cooked lunch every day (can't eat the school lunch) and most days am cooking from scratch. I know most folks will say that this is impossible for them, but once you live in a country where NOT doing so is impossible you learn to do it. Period. You learn to make it work. When I have a slow part of work I think about what is still in my fridge, plan a basic dinner, write down what extra supplies I might need and pick them up on my walk home.

general tips:

Embrace Quinoa. It is easy to make and is a whole protein. It easily be used in place of many things so you don't always have to find quinoa specific recipes. I use it in place of tiny pasta for cold pasta salads (which often use beans as well, bonus!) if I'm making a couscous dish I mix some in.

Adding sliced almonds or other nuts in your salads.

The same goes for mixing in tofu and beans where you can. There are many recipes for seasoned white beans I occasionally make dill seasoned white beans, keep them in a jar in my fridge, and toss them into salads (using whatever oil/vinegar,dill that still clings to them as the dressing).

Stirfrys are easy. When you make them, add in slices of tofu or nuts or beans (always press the water out of tofu before this, watery tofu is a turn off in stir frys) serve over brown rice...protein!

These steps will also help keep you feeling more full than you would without them. A few more calories, yes... but those calories help prevent possible larger calorie splurges due to hunger between meals and poor food choices.

I eat natto every day, but that's not an option for most.

What is a good split for one meal in terms of carbs, protein and fat? Like for breakfast for example. I had oatmeal (blech..I cant even eat one serving of it, but what other options are there) Well, I guess I can eat eggs, but let me tell you, I will never eat processed egg whites. Id rather have the natural cholesterol from the egg. I dont mind cottage cheee, but what to eat with it so its not boring and bland as hell?

Im really going to have to plan this out. I totally fell off the wagon and had, like 10 hershey kisses and came home and couldnt stop eating. Tho its wierd, sometime when I cant stop eating is when I loose more weight. Gah..its all so confusing.

Lucy: doesnt that SUCK? I feel for you when you think you are eating well then to find out you really arent. Logging in your foods is a real eye opener and having to choose smart is so hard.

Try this calculator out...it'll give you an idea of the calories, fat, carbs & Protein you need to maintain or lose based on your height and weight.

http://nutrition.about.com/library/b...tion_guide.htm

I make a hot cereal with amaranth or quinoa, apple, and almond or rice milk. I can cook up a pot and then just reheat some in the mornings. The apple sweetens it so you don't need sugar. I like cherry tomatoes and black pepper in my cottage cheese.

Annwyn, I can see how you lost a lot of weight, but that diet sounds so....bland...like....like....eating sand :(

I just had 1 cup of organic, unsweetend soy milk. For the protein, until I realized I didnt read the lable to see if it even has more protein. Im wondering if I might be allergic to milk, so Im giving soy a try.Hmm...7 grams of protein, 4 grams of fat. Can I assume its good fat?

Is this really what you eat every single day? And if so, why? There are plenty of other healthy foods, what is the purpose of denying yourself some variation. Why eat chicken every day when fish, shellfish or tofu is also healthy? It sounds unbelievably boring, and where is your source of omega 3 fatty acids, and healthy fats in general? Just curious.

And just a FYI. Since we're critiqueing each other's food choices in this thread. Protein shakes qualify as a "highly processed food".

For general health, weight loss and/or muscle gain, Krista at http://www.stumptuous.com recommends 30% protein, 30% fat, and 40% carbs. Of course its understood that the fats are "good fats" and the carbs are "good carbs".

I had a craving for a veggie burger today, so I went to BK and got one. when I was reading the nutritional poster displayed on the wall, I was amazed to see that they actually carry a 1,000 calorie sandwich. the childrens meals have about 500 calories. The poster also had a highlighted box with "healthy choice" meal suggestions, one of which was about 700 calories.

On the bright side, I guess an optimist would say that for jsut a couple of bucks you can buy enough person-fuel for an entire day.

I am training for a figure competition, i think i posted that in another post somewhere, i do have variation, not just chicken, i do have tofu, fish and eye of round steak, as well as a few other veggies. My omega 3 fatty acids as calcium come in the bottle from gnc. Healthy fats come from the ocassional avacado. as for the protine shake....(foot in mouth) yes it is processed. but not in the same way as a can of soup, or a bag of potato chips are. There is no high fructose corn syrup, no red dye 40, no sucrolose or any other junk created after 1940. It is pure whey protine, and isolate protine, nothing else just the broken down protine to help build muscle. Soy milk YES is good fat. When im tired of whey protine i switch to soy protine
