New Weight Loss Goals Thread

Since Amity's post on the old Bhuz is now defunct, let's start up a new one.

I haven't weighed myself since last week, but I can tell that the weight is dropping off. My "fat" jeans are getting loose again, thank goodness (you know it's bad when your fat clothes are too tight).

What I'm doing - eating a "real foods" diet, taking lots of calcium, and drinking cleansing tea like whoa. By real foods, I mean I'm only eating things that my great-grandmother could have identified as being food - salads, soups, cereal, fresh fruits and veggies, etc. No more frozen foods. f I choose to indulge, I'm opting for the full-fat, real sugar, original versions over the low-fat, low-cal, low-carb, splenda imitations that taste like cardboard and don't really satisfy.

I'm worried that my diet is a little TOO low-fat, though, as I've suddenly started craving cashews and I remember that happening on a previous diet that was extremely low in fat. I think I'll up the olive oil in my salad dressing and eat some more nuts to balance things out so I don't stuff my face with cheese.

How are you all doing?

- Lucy

I am trying to stay on Weight Watchers, but last weekend was horrible. I ate so much random food. It started with brunch on Saturday.

I'm going to try to stay on program very strictly the next three days, just to see if I can do it. I want to average a loss of a pound a week. So far I am meeting that goal, but I've got to get back on track!

I am trying to get back on track after several very stressful weeks. I just signed up for the Sonoma diet and am looking forward to starting it. Focuses on whole grains, fruits and veggies. I've probably gained back 5-10pounds that I had lost so am feeling very fat and actually discouraged. I want to lose the weight but feel so frustrated. Anyway, wish me luck!

Good luck to everyone else!

I was doing great having had lost 7 pounds after Christmas. Within one week of not paying attention, I've gained it all back. It's not like I was pigging out or anything, but the Easter weekend of visiting and chocolate didn't help.

Back to the grind. Ugh.

Can I jump in on this? I want to lose 20 pounds. I have no money to join any clubs like weight watchers or something. I can't even go to my gym because I owe them money. I'm hoping the weather will get warmer so I can start doing outside stuff.

Can I join? I'm actually down ten pounds in the last six weeks. I'd like to lose another 7 - 10 pounds. I've been doing South Beach, pretty much. I know, it's last years diet! But it's helping me focus on eating whole, non-processed foods. Actually, for me it ends up looking a lot like Lucy's diet -- only eating things that would be recognizable as food to my great-grandmother! My exception is Splenda sweetened cocoa. It's my indulgence at the end of every day (even in the summer!) but I'm not eating any sugar, corn syrup, or other sugars.

I'm a South Beacher too, Severina, and have managed to get rid of nearly 20 pounds in about a month.... then I went on vacation and put a little back on.... then took it back off, so I'm back to where I sarted pretty much. I've not been an angel this week, but I'd hoped to be down a couple more pounds by Elevation in Colorado this weekend (I'm marking small goals by dance events since I have a staggering number of pounds to lose overall).

We'll see how the next couple of days go and how well I do in Colorado. Since it's a dance weekend, I think I'll be able to behave. Heavy, bad-for-me foods never make me feel like dancing. Living on salads and lean meats does!!

YUK!

I got my fat bum on the scale today at I'm back up to 190! WHEN did that happen? I didn't think I'd been eating that bad.

Oh wait...fast food and Starbucks? Yeah, I guess I have...

Let me ask you all..has counting calories worked for you in the past? I love Weight Watchers, but I am SO stinkin bored with it!

so now, my goal is this:

I want to lose 40 pounds. In 8 months. I think that's doable. 5 pounds a month? I just have to be strict with myself.

wish me luck!!!

Holy crap! 20 pounds in a MONTH? That's unreal.

Anyway, I'm not counting calories because I'd drive myself mad that way. I figure if I eat lots of raw fruits and veggies and salads (plus my standby, Cheerios!) then I'm doing okay.

I used to be very anti-fake-sugar, and I still won't drink diet soda (tastes gross to me), but I have a new love: Jello puddings made with skim milk and Splenda. 60 calories for a whole pudding cup, and they actually don't taste gross to me, and satisfy the craving for chocolatey treats. Mmm. Thank you, Jello!

Yasmin - I do count calories when I'm trying to lose weight (like right now!) but I don't do Weight Watchers either. I'm not willing to spend money on it when I figure I can do it myself. I like playing with spreadsheets, so I amuse myself by constantly "improving" my tracking spreadsheet. That helps me stick with the plan because it's fun to update the spreadsheet (which, of course, I must do frequently throughout the day!).

Hi Mihri, I'll see you this weekend! BTW, in Evergreen we're at super high elevation, so make sure to plan to drink more water than you normally would, otherwise you'll get a bad headache. Try not to drink lots of coffee, either. Oh, and alchohol affects you more too. I get drunk on two sips of alchohol, and in Colorado it's one! or smelling it! When I first moved to Boulder from NYC it took me 6 months to acclimate. It is really super dry out here!
see ya soon,

20 lbs in a month? Holy cow! How'd you do that? Just salds and lean meats, any fruit?

I need to lose 10 pounds, just 10 stinkin' pounds, and it's impossible I tell ya.
I absolutely cannot exercise any more, I perform 2 times a week at minimum, teach 4 classes a week, my company rehearsal once a week, yoga 2 times a week, walk my dog, etc.
I know it's food, but what can I cut out? I've cut out wheat, (breads, pastas) 'cause they make me feel ill too, plus get f-a-t.
*sigh* help.....

No problemo! This is my mother in-law's recipe. Twas the way to hubby's heart...

Lentil Soup
  • 1/2 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup barley
  • 1 cup washed, split lentils
  • 10 oz can of beef broth
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 large stock celery, diced
  • 1 small, crushed bay leaf
  • Chopped parsley
  • 6 cups vegetable stock or water
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 large carrot, diced
  • 2 cups stewed tomatoes, mashed

Brown beef, add lentils, barley, water & broth. Bring to a boil and simmer 30 min. Add remaining ingredients, reduce heat, and simmer another 90 minutes.

I always drop a LOT at the beginning of any diet. Apparently, I hang onto quite a bit of water weight when I'm gaining or at a plateau. Besides, it was Phase 1 of South Beach, which does deliver fast initial results. Now I'll be happy with 5 pounds a month and I'll have to reassess if I lose more than 10 in a month. I know continued rapid loss isn't healthy!

Not to worry, Maria. I grew up in Colorado Springs and come "home" regularly, so I know the drill. You to tell me to pack lots of lotion and chapstick though!! Thanks for looking out for your lower elevation visitors. I too have seen many people succumb to the perils of the mountain air!

As for the 20 lbs, no, I didn't do fruit the first month. Phase 1 of South Beach forbids it. You only do phase 1 for 2 weeks, but it's safe to do it longer if you're feeling like you can, so I did it for a month. Basically you eat lean meat and dairy and vegees and nuts. That's about it. I'm on to phase 2 now, which adds in fruit and whole grains as well as the occasional dark chocolate indulgence.

Lucy,

What's whoa tea? Also eat walnuts, that's what heard (runs to Whole Foods to stock up on walnuts). I just started reading 'You on a diet". Really interesting stuff.
My Dad's girlfriend was like, "My son went to a nutritionist once and he lost 40 pounds. He only went the one time, that's all it took." Wow, it's that easy! Why didn't I think of that 15 years ago...

I'm doing alright so far. As of today, I've hit the 30-lb. mark weight-loss wise. I still hope to lose another 30 by next year, taking into account potential plateaus and possible weight gain. Basically, I'm a psycho when it comes to working out (cardio before work, strength training twice to three times a week after work, belly dancing, hip hop, and pole dancing immersed in there). I leave my weekends completely free though.

I'm trying to be more proficient in tracking my food intake. I really want to be serious with that if I want to maintain my weight loss. I'm considering trying recipes from the South Beach diet. I think for me moderation is key. I know I can't deprive myself of things I love like chocolate, but as long as I know that I've been eating okay, I can reward myself.
