Yes, the outermost points of my lower back tat were definitely the most painful part... like being sliced with a razor blade. Never having given birth or broken any bones, I'd say this was the most excruciating pain I've ever had. Not unbearable, but I decided 90 minutes is my limit. Overall, that one hurt more than my shoulder tat. I had an area about the size of a nickel on my shoulder where I didn't feel anything at all.

What's amazing is that immediately after it was finished, the pain vanished.

LOL! Yeah, it just works out that way. I got them before I started dancing, but most of my costumes feature purple, turquoise & white.

Oh, and thank you to HaleemaChandani for this gorgeous costume.

But what does that really mean? For those who have a tat in this location - will it be an annoying kind of a pain, a crying kind of a pain, a screaming kind of a pain? Rate your pain experience from 1 to 10. I'm thinking a "mostly black" rose, between 2 and 3 inches high. Low on the spine.

Experiences of my dance sisters would be appreciated!
My partner got a back tat. The artist told him he would stop anytime that the pain got to be too much. Men, in my experience, do have a lower pain threshold. What kept my guy in the chair was the idea of having only 1/2 a tat on his back. He had just gotten to the point where he was going to tell the guy to stop because the pain was way too much, when the artist told him he was done.

I have a fairly large image of Isis on my lower back. I was expecting the needle to hurt. What I wasn't expecting was to feel my internal organs vibrating as the needle on my spine sent vibrations through my entire core.

<tramp stamp> I seriously hope my mother never hears that. My tattoo was the source of an enormous argument during which she accused me of getting it to hurt her and rebel. I haven't lived at home since I left for college at 18 and I was 27 when I got the tatt. Yeah. After nine years of living on my own, and five years of paying my own bills, I decided I needed to stick it to her. She finally calmed down, but she's convinced that I will come to see the error of my inky ways (oh, and it's probably a sign that I'm on drugs, too).

Of course it's painful but you'll have to weigh in if you think it's worth going through. My artist had told me the two most sensitive places to be tattooed were lower abdominals and the underside of your upper arm (notice some men only have arm wraps that go part-way around). One girl earlier mentioned having her nipples pierced was more painful; I didn't think so. So it varies person to person.

Before having mine, a woman told me it felt like someone sticking a knife in her back and carving her flesh (ew). I don't think it was that horrible, but there is a dull pain punctuated with sharp zingers here and there. You'll know when the artist moves to a new pain-receptor (nocioreceptor) zone. My mom got a tattoo on her toe to celebrate 50 and she loves it! I think it's wonderful.

As for the slutty indications that men have made about tattoos on women, they seem to forget tattoos have been around a very long time. They started in Polynesia (my heritage) and both men and women were tattooed for various reasons. I hope you find an artist you really like and good luck!

When the piece in the center of my upper back was being inked, there was one spot near my right shoulder blade that would make something several inches away on my neck twitch and jump. Wierdest feeling!

Here I am sitting with a brand new tattoo myself

I got it done yesterday on my neck, actually to cover up an older tattoo that had faded and the black lines had started to bleed out.

On some spots it hardly hurt, but the higher up my neck the tattoo artist advanced, the worse it was!
She then put some kind of spray on the skin that makes just the top of the skin numb, so you feel the pressure of the hand, but not the needles at all. I was very grateful for that! It took about 2,5 hours, including the drawing.

BTW, is there an English name for lower back tattoos (especially the black tribal ones)? In German, we call them Arschgeweih. Which means "ass antlers" Since the name came up, fewer people are getting them, I wonder why....

Oh, and don't ask for pictures right now - it's impossible for me to take a picture of my own neck, really! But I'll get one soon.

Lol, yes, me and my friends call them 'arse antlers' too, mainly the celtic or tribal looking ones. Personally I think they look chavvy and would never get one done in a million years. But each to their own!

They're enormously popular here in California - but its California. More Belly Dancers have them than not - which is my inspiration to get one for myself!

Ooops, just read my post and it must sound like I'm being totally facetious! Apologies for that I really only meant to be a bit mischevious ... honest!

Actually I do have a small tattoo myself, it's a lizard on my anklebone that I had done when I was 18.
My Mum still says I will regret it one day, ha ha!

Naw, I'm a guy, I don't need breasts! Wouldn't know what to do with 'em if I had 'em - plus I've seen all the trouble you gals go through with bra issues - no thanx!

Don't need hair extensions either - my hair is plenty long as it is.

Not into tans, I like the pale look myself.

Next?

They're the low-slung velour pants, often in candy pink, if you live in California you can't be far from a pair right now!
